Two in two days: Liverpool get ANOTHER Konate contract boost

Liverpool got an Ibrahima Konate boost earlier this week when Real Madrid informed the club they were not going to pursue a deal for the defender.

Konate, 26, had seemingly been all in on a move to the Bernabeu - declining several Liverpool attempts to sign him to a new contract.

The Frenchman has been at Anfield since 2021 - signing from RB Leipzig in a £35m deal. It took him quite some time to reach his potential but last season emerged as one of the Premier League’s standout defenders alongside Virgil van Dijk.

Together the duo helped bring home the top-flight title with Van Dijk going on to sign a contract extension until 2027.

Konate though remains in limbo. Currently on £140k per week, the stopper would like something north of £200k per week before he considers renewing.

Real Madrid rule out Konate move

But his form this season now looks to have driven Madrid away - with Los Blancos likely to focus on other targets. And it looks like sporting director Richard Hughes can rest easily over Bayern Munich too.

The Germans have got Dayot Upamecano in a contract predicament of their own - with the 27-year-old also out of contract at the end of the season.

And if Konate’s international team-mate won’t renew it had been suggested that Vincent Kompany’s side would move for Konate as a replacement.

Bayern back off Konate

But now Bayern insider Christian Falk claims that Bayern are not currently focussing on the Konate deal. Bayern’s priority remains on getting Upamecano signed up for the long term.

And if the France international won’t renew then there are plans to go for Marc Guehi instead.

“Bayern are maintaining all theor focus on securing a contract extension for Upamecano,” he writes.

“That’s their only priority. If the French defender signs a new deal with Bayern, they will not move for either Konate or Guehi.

“While the situation may change next summer, that’s the plan right now. So, the possibility of signing Konate is not entirely off, but it hinges on many factors.”

Konate running out of options

So that’s two of three potentially interested clubs now OFF the table for Konate. Real Madrid and Bayern represented two legitimate destinations but now he could be left with only Paris Saint-Germain in the mix.

And there are no guarantees that PSG will move for their hometown defender at this stage. With his form plummeting, Konate’s negotiating position has been weakened not only with Liverpool but also the clubs he could have once foreseen ending up at.
