Liverpool are in the market for a new centre-back and could make an €80m star their next signing. It's a crucial one.

It's clear as day that Liverpool need to sign a centre-back. The Reds are down to three senior options right now after Giovanni Leoni was ruled out for around a year.

That's a massive blow, of course, and one that puts Liverpool in a difficult position. Virgil van Dijk, Ibrahima Konate and Joe Gomez are now the remaining senior options.

Konate, however, injured himself against Chelsea. While it appears he may not miss any Liverpool games, it was a moment that left the Reds incredibly short.

Arne Slot didn't actually fancy Gomez in that moment, either. He moved Ryan Gravenberch to centre-back instead, further demonstrating that he doesn't trust his options there.

The club will need to look at someone next year - a situation made all the more worrisome because of Konate's contract situation. But they may have an exciting - and crucial - signing lined up.

Liverpool's next centre-back

It's no secret that Liverpool wanted to sign Marc Guehi as the transfer window was closing. They couldn't quite get it done, however.

Signing the Crystal Palace captain in 2026 won't be easy, even if the Reds will try. His expiring contract will inevitably draw a lot of interest in his signature, increasing his options and bumping up his wage demands.

It's why Liverpool will consider other options. One of those is Ousmane Diomande, according to Talksport.

The Sporting CP star is expected to move on next year, having been linked with transfers for the last two years. It's also expected that his €80m asking price will dramatically reduce with just one year remaining on his deal.

Diomande, then, may be the next centre-back signing. He's certainly one who ticks all the right boxes - though, it's made clear by the article that he's simply one of several options who excelled in Liverpool's data analysis.

Ultimately, he may not be the best value-for-money option. But he's undoubtedly on the shortlist and one to watch for Liverpool fans.
