Liverpool sent OMINOUS Dominik Szoboszlai transfer warning

Liverpool have got some contract issues to sort over certain first-team stars.

Chief among them right now would appear to be Dominik Szoboszlai. The 25-year-old has been spoken about as a potential successor to Virgil van Dijk as club captain - but his future is not currently secured beyond 2028.

Given Van Dijk is out of contract in 2027 that doesn’t leave Szoboszlai long with the armband if the club decide to give it to him.

Sporting director Richard Hughes will therefore need to tie the Hungary captain to a new contract - as soon and as smoothly as possible.

Szoboszlai signed for the Anfield side for around £60m back in 2023 from RB Leipzig. The contract he was given reflected his status as one of the best up-and-coming midfielders in the European game - but it’s by no means a blockbuster salary.

Capology puts the No8 right down the Reds’ pecking order - on £120k per week basic. And for a renewal to take place it’s going to have to match Szoboszlai’s increasing importance to the club.

Szoboszlai: No decision made

He proved himself a tireless worker during the 2024/25 Premier League title win and at times this season it’s been a one-man show in the Liverpool midfield.

Szoboszlai and his advisors will be well aware of his potential value in contract talks - either at Liverpool or elsewhere.

A few weeks ago it was reported by several sources that talks between Hughes and Szoboszlai’s entourage had kicked off and the player offered a non-commital update following the weekend draw against Burnley.

“Of course I am happy here but you know how football works and that is something everybody has to take into account,” he told the press.

“There is always progress but no decision has been made. I’ll just keep on going every week, every training session, giving my best for the team and for the fans. Let’s see what is going to happen in the future. There has been talks but for sure not any decision has been made.”

Right now that is not what Liverpool fans want to hear.

Real Madrid like Szoboszlai

Yes Szoboszlai is tied down for another two-and-a-bit years. But a contract like his is a ticking time bomb if no renewal is on the cards.

Liverpool won’t want to see their £60m signing decrease in value and so it’s in there interests to meet him in the middle over his contract demands.

Otherwise they might have to consider the possibility of a sale - like they did with Luis Diaz last summer when it became apparent no deal was on the cards.

Real Madrid are of course watching with interest. As a Hungarian icon the attraction of playing for Los Blancos will be self-evident for Szoboszlai.

He has the chance to follow in the footsteps of the legendary Ferenc Puskas at the Bernabeu and it goes without saying he will get better money - and more fame - in the Spanish capital.

Szoboszlai needs a pay rise

Back-of-the-envelope calculations show Szoboszlai is currently making LESS than practically every Madrid first-team squad member.

That goes for big hitters like Jude Bellingham (€400k per week) and Fede Valverde (€320k per week) all the way down to bit-part players like Dani Ceballos (€200k per week).

Szoboszlai has established himself as one of the best midfielders in the world over the last year - even if he’s had some wobbly moments in the last few fixtures.

Liverpool will soon have a salary gap open up at the top of their budget with time running out for both Van Dijk and Mohamed Salah.

And if the club have any chance of sustaining their employment of Szoboszlai on a long-term basis then he is going to have to command similar kinds of money.

Talks are ongoing but unproductive; it’s the same tale we heard over Trent Alexander-Arnold and recently for Ibrahima Konate. If Szoboszlai’s future ends up in doubt any time soon then the club cannot say they haven’t been warned.
