Liverpool are reportedly confused by Newcastle United's reaction to their Alexander Isak bid. The Reds thought things were clear.

Liverpool want to sign Alexander Isak from Newcastle United - that much is obvious. The Reds have had him at the top of their shopping list since the start of the year.

In fact, back when Isak scored against Liverpool in the Carabao Cup final, there was hope that he'd switch sides the following summer.

Now, efforts have been made in that direction. Not just from Liverpool, either, but Isak himself has pushed for the transfer to happen and continues to do so.

The Swede has not played for Newcastle since the start of pre-season. He wants to leave and made that perfectly clear in a public statement.

But long before that statement, Liverpool made an offer. A record-breaking one, in fact, of around £120m.

Newcastle rejected that bid - and their reaction since has reportedly left the Reds confused.

Liverpool left confused

The Athletic claims there's bemusement at Liverpool in the wake of their bid for Isak. Newcastle, it seems, have taken it all very differently to the Reds.

Liverpool aren't sure why Newcastle feel they've acted incorrectly by not bidding again. There's a feeling from the North East that the offer was just an attempt to unsettle the player.

But that's not what the bidding club thought coming out of it. Liverpool simply haven't bid again because Newcastle gave the impression they wouldn't sell until they signed a new striker.

That hasn't happened and so there hasn't been another bid. Liverpool understood it would simply be rejected, no matter what the amount was.

It's unclear where things move from here but Newcastle certainly aren't any closer to signing that striker. Without it, can a deal actually happen?

We're not sure. Liverpool aren't sure. Newcastle also don't seem to be sure. And as we get closer to the 1st and the close of the window, it's looking less and less likely that Isak will move.
