Liverpool had a remarkable summer transfer campaign - spending somewhere in the region of £450m on new players.

There have been plenty of changes to the squad which won the 2024/25 Premier League title - not least in attack where the Reds have twice broken the British transfer record.

Sporting director Richard Hughes completed a deal worth up to £116m for the Germany playmaker Florian Wirtz before spending £125m on Alexander Isak.

Big changes were also promised in the full-back department - with Trent Alexander-Arnold and Kostas Tsimikas among those players departing.

Robertson challenging Kerkez

In have come Jeremie Frimpong and Milos Kerkez - for a combined total of around £70m - but we are still waiting for those upgrades to truly establish themselves.

Frimpong’s injury has opened the door to Dominik Szoboszlai to temporarily take over at right-back while Kerkez has been struggling.

The 21-year-old Hungarian has been substituted off in TWO of his opening four Premier League matches - on his debut versus former club Bournemouth and at the weekend away at Burnley.

Kerkez was hauled off during the first half having been booked for diving and then committing a dicey last-man challenge on a Clarets attacker.

Arne Slot had seen enough - summoning Andy Robertson from the bench to take over.

Robbo putting Kerkez under pressure

It’s been a tough summer for the 31-year-old Scotland man - being dropped out of Slot’s first-team plans and being linked with the exit.

Atletico Madrid were very keen on adding Robbo - but he ultimately stayed put in order to try and win his place back. The early signs are positive for Robertson - with Kerkez not yet demonstrating much improvement in that department following a £40m transfer.

And now the Scotland captain has admitted that he is putting PRESSURE on the former AC Milan youth - in the hope that his performances lift.

“He is only young and I think we forget that,” Robertson told The Herald after the Burnley game.

“You try to help them as much as you can but you want to put pressure on them and you want to play games.

"He will be the starting left-back for Liverpool in the future and it’s up to me to push him this season and help him improve.

“He just needs to keep working hard and not let today affect him, which it won’t as he’s a confident lad, and I’ll help him as much as I can.”

Robbo: Bournemouth to Liverpool is a massive jump

Robertson is under contract until 2026 at Anfield having first joined the club from Hull City back in 2017. He too endured a rocky start - under Jurgen Klopp - but once he won the German manager over he became a fixed member of the Liverpool back five.

Robertson has gone on to feature in TWO Premier League title wins and has also claimed the Champions League and FIFA Club World Cup among other honours.

“It’s a massive jump,” he says of Kerkez’s teething problems.

“I came from Hull, he’s come from Bournemouth and it’s probably quite similar.

“There are a lot more eyes on you in a Liverpool jersey than at those two clubs. He has transitioned well.

“There’s a lot of information and a lot of different ways of playing and he just needs to keep going and keep his confidence.

“I have no doubt in the future he will be a fantastic left-back for Liverpool and that’s the main thing.”
