Liverpool CANNOT miss January deal for England midfielder

Liverpool will reportedly make no signings in the winter transfer window.

Having spent £450m on new players last summer it appears sporting director Richard Hughes is ready to keep his powder dry until the end of the season.

But it would be wrong to ignore the club’s failings so far this campaign. And if the opportunity arises then Hughes should take it for the sake of improving the squad.

It’s widely acknowledged that the Premier League champions need some midfield cover and added quality for example.

Liverpool need extra midfield options

Arne Slot is getting diminishing returns from Ryan Gravenberch and Alexis Mac Allister in particular - while Wataru Endo has been a much more marginal figure this season than he was during the title run-in.

Curtis Jones and Dominik Szoboszlai are holding their own but adding one more senior midfield option could alleviate a lot of the burden on Slot’s players right now.

The time is right to revisit interest in a previous transfer target in the shape of England international Angel Gomes.

Liverpool interested in Angel Gomes

The 25-year-old was first on Liverpool’s radar during his days at Lille - before his free transfer move to Marseille last summer.

Raised in the Manchester United youth system Gomes barely played for the Red Devils before leaving for Lille in 2020 - via a loan spell at Boavista.

The playmaker has grown in stature since then - earning four England caps under Lee Carsley and finding his way to a top European club in Marseille.

However with Roberto De Zerbi’s side looking for added midfield recruits this winter it has been reported by L’Equipe that Gomes has been told to find himself a new club.

Angel Gomes needs to find a new club

“While Marseille are keen to sign Angers midfielder Himad Abdelli and Feyenoord midfielder Quinten Timber during this winter transfer window, Angel Gomes' future looks increasingly uncertain,” the report reads.

“As announced in December, the club and the player, who arrived in Provence on a free transfer last June, were preparing for an early departure, and in recent days, the England international (4 caps) has been informed by the club's management that he must find a new club by February 2nd.”

Under contract until 2028 it would not take a huge fee to prise him out of the Velodrome and this is one of those opportunistic deals that Hughes has previously spoken about.

A progressive passer - capable of playing at No8 - Gomes would add quality in possession for the Anfield side. He has recently fallen out of favour but that may well have to do with his club’s desire for a quick cash-in.
