Liverpool’s Jeremie Frimpong deal suddenly looks GENIUS

Liverpool’s move to sign Jeremie Frimpong from Bayer Leverkusen suddenly looks even better. The Reds are making magic happen.

Liverpool are now incredibly close to signing Jeremie Frimpong from Bayer Leverkusen. The Dutchman completed a medical with the Reds on Monday.

Now all that’s really left is paying the fee and signing the contracts. The former is very simple, too, as Frimpong has a €35m release clause.

Liverpool are now expected to pay that - possibly even today - and complete the transfer. Frimpong would be Richard Hughes’s third first-team signing and the Reds’ first ahead of the 2025/26 season.

And what a brilliant signing! Liverpool move quickly to replace Trent Alexander-Arnold, who will leave on a free transfer this summer.

They do it by bringing in a player who can really shake things up and offer a lot of options to Arne Slot. But that’s not the only reason the deal looks like a genius one.

A new update from Brazil suggests Liverpool have themselves a bargain.

Jeremie Frimpong’s price tag

Frimpong was not the only right-back Liverpool looked at. They also had eyes on Flamengo’s Wesley, a teenager who recently broke into the Brazil setup.

Wesley is considered to be a massive talent but one who’s still relatively unproven. Making the jump from Brazilian football to the top end of European football is difficult, after all.

And O Globo suggests Wesley will be an expensive risk for a team. Manchester City, now favourites to land him, will be asked for at least €40m for the full-back. Flamengo hope it will climb to €45m.

That puts the Frimpong deal into perspective. Liverpool will pay €35m (just under £30m) to sign him - a much, much more proven player.

They’re getting a sure thing, in other words, while City will likely need to pay quite a bit more just to take a risk on a young full-back. There’s no question here that Liverpool are making the smarter deal.

Now, maybe Wesley does go on to be a superstar but there’s no guarantee for that whatsoever. Liverpool want to solidify their right-flank and have gone for the best option to do just that.
