Surely it's wrong? Liverpool linked with BIZARRE blockbuster transfer

Liverpool have been linked with a bizarre signing. One that makes so little sense it's surely not true?

Liverpool went through a remarkable rebuild in the summer as they spent record-breaking amounts after a title win. It’s something you never really see - an admission that the squad that delivered the ultimate trophy wasn’t what the club wanted.

Out went a whole host of players, raking in over £200m with sales. Liverpool then went out and spent over £400m on new stars and while they haven’t quite clicked into a functional team yet, the sense is that the Reds are building towards something.

The biggest transfer of them all was for Alexander Isak. His arrival from Newcastle United is the new British record fee and came shortly after Liverpool had bought the most expensive striker in their history.

That move was for Hugo Ekitike, who arrived from Eintracht Frankfurt for around £80m. Of course, his record was then broken by Isak’s move and now the Reds boast over £200m in a pair of strikers alone.

Which is a fact that makes one new report seem absolutely bizarre.

Jean-Philippe Mateta?

Caughtoffside are the latest outlet to link Liverpool with Jean-Philippe Mateta. There’s a feeling that the Frenchman could leave Crystal Palace in 2026.

Mateta will enter the final 18 months of his deal in January, per Sky Sports, which could prompt a sale if he doesn’t agree a new deal. Palace won’t want a repeat of the Marc Guehi situation, after all.

However, it’s completely unclear why Liverpool would sign Mateta. There’s simply no sense behind it and while it’s entirely believably that the Reds looked at him before signing Isak, there’s zero logic behind moving for him now.

Liverpool have issues at centre-back, they haven’t addressed the base of their midfield and they never replaced Luis Diaz on the wing. Why on earth would they put up millions to sign a 28-year-old striker when they’ve just spent £200m on a pair?

For one, they typically only use one centre-forward. They couldn’t guarantee Mateta any minutes, while it takes investment funds away from other areas.

So for us, this is nonsensical and why multiple outlets are reporting that Liverpool could bid is beyond us.
