Liverpool have been linked with several wingers ahead of the summer transfer window. We could see replacements brought in for Federico Chiesa and Luis Diaz if they leave the club while cover should be sought for Mohamed Salah and Cody Gakpo.

One player long established on the Reds radar is Jamie Gittens of Borussia Dortmund. The 20-year-old Englishman had eight goals and three assists across the Bundesliga season, although he only made the bench for the final two games of the campaign.

Liverpool have reportedly been on the case of the former Manchester City youth for quite a while now, with reports of a bid materialising last February.

Back then it was claimed by BILD’s Christian Falk that Gittens would be sold at the end of the season - albeit on one condition.

With Dortmund toiling in mid-table, it was speculated that players would have to be sold if the club missed out on Champions League qualification.

Gittens was tipped to depart

Gittens, Serhou Guirassy and Nico Schlotterbeck were among those considered up for sale as a club the size of Dortmund will have budgeted for Champions League participation.

Losing out on a place in the revamped competitions would blow a sizeable hole in the Dortmund finances and that shortfall would have to be covered through sales.

Given Gittens’ development and the interest he aroused in the Premier League, he may well have been first out of the door.

But Liverpool’s attempts to land the prodigious dribbler are going to suffer as a result of the weekend’s events.

Dortmund qualify for CL

By beating Holstein Kiel, 3-0, BVB snuck into fourth place in the Bundesliga table, thereby guaranteeing a passage to the Champions League for next season.

The Yellow and Blacks ended up winning seven of their last eight league games of the season - their only blemish being a 2-2 draw with Bayern.

Niko Kovac’s side really came into their own down the stretch, preserving their Champions League status and also safeguarding the futures of their star players.

Dortmund are under much less pressure to sell as a result of their Champions League qualification, meaning frustration for suitors in the market.
