Why aren't swap deals a thing anymore?

It feels like there was a time and a period when they used to happen all the time in football. Suddenly, they have kind of just died off.

Liverpool definitely don't tend to do them. The closest they came in recent years was when Fabio Carvalho was sent to RB Leipzig on loan to replace Dominik Szoboszlai, who joined the Reds a few weeks later.

The two deals were not directly related but they kind of happened in a domino effect so maybe you can get away with calling that half a swap deal.

Anyway, swap deals could be making a comeback soon.

The Premier League's Profit and Sustainability (PSR) rules have meant clubs have to be more careful about how they spend their transfer budgets.

One way of getting around not spending is simply by swapping players. And Liverpool could do that easily with what could be a sensational deal with Paris Saint Germain.

As Ibrahima Konate enters the final year of his contract, Liverpool will not want to lose the Frenchman. However, they must reluctantly accept if no resolution is made soon, they can only except the worst.

That would be losing Konate on a free transfer, with Paris Saint Germain very interested in his services as revealed exclusively by Anfield Watch.

The Parisians have identified Konate as a target for this summer. At this stage this is a deal Liverpool have to entertain.

But there is a way both sides can benefit from a possible transaction.

That's because Anfield Watch also exclusively revealed that Liverpool are interested in Warren Zaire-Emery. The French teenage star is very highly admired by the club's scouts and Liverpool think there is a deal to be had.

If there is, they would be willing to pay whatever it takes to land the youngster.

But they might not have to. Zaire-Emery has fallen to fringes of the PSG squad recently. With the likes Desire Doue, Vitinha and Joao Neves ahead of him in the pecking order it's hard to see him getting back into the side.

Liverpool, on the other hand, are looking for a midfielder of that profile for a while now. They wanted to sign Moises Caicedo in 2023 and then Martin Zubimendi in 2024.

So there's a genuine need there for the Reds and Zaire-Emery could definitely be available.

That's why a loan move would make perfect sense and why it could actually be on the cards this summer. PSG get Konate, Liverpool get Zaire-Emery and everyone is happy.
