Recent developments around Ibrahima Konate have given Liverpool fans cause for alarm.

Of course with sporting director Richard Hughes chasing the signature of Marc Guehi - it could indicate that the Premier League champions are paving the way for Konate’s exit.

Then came the 26-year-old’s interview with French media on international duty - where he joked that Kylian Mbappe was calling him “every two hours” about joining Real Madrid.

Konate is out of contract in 2026 - and is reported to have turned down THREE separate Liverpool contract offers. If that is indeed the case then the Anfield club need to prepare as best they can for his exit.

Real Madrid confident over Konate

The transfer drum is beating louder in the Spanish media - with Defensa Central now claiming that Real Madrid have done all they can to secure Konate’s arrival on a free in 2026.

Los Blancos now believe that Konate is destined to come to the Bernabeu even though they cannot formalise a contract offer until January 1.

Nonetheless the 15-time European champions are “confident” over the France defender - with the “ball now in the player’s court”.

Konate dreams of Madrid

“It's well known that Real Madrid is closely monitoring Konaté and that the defender dreams of wearing white at the Santiago Bernabéu,” the report reads.

“His latest gestures toward the club demonstrate his intentions. Konaté has made it clear in his latest statements that his desire is to play at the Bernabéu, although to do so he'll have to resist Liverpool's latest attempts to finalize his contract renewal.”

Liverpool’s first choice will be to renew Konate’s contract. Having joined the club from RB Leipzig in 2021 for £35m - the Reds will be dead against losing him for nothing.

Liverpool starting to realise Konate won't renew

Even more so because he’s now established himself as first choice alongside Virgil van Dijk. If they cannot secure him to a new deal, the next best option will be to gain some money in the market for him in January.

But again Konate could opt to run his deal down and Liverpool will be powerless to prevent that from happening.

“The Anfield team is starting to realize that Konaté will be an Arnold next summer,” the report concludes - referencing the acquisition of Trent Alexander-Arnold at the very end of his Liverpool contract in 2025.

This transfer saga appears to have taken a decisive turn in the last few days. Can Liverpool turn it back in their favour?
