Liverpool complete signing of £69m MEGASTAR
It’s been a landmark summer transfer window for Liverpool and sporting director Richard Hughes.
The squad has had a huge makeover - with the club twice breaking the British transfer record. First Florian Wirtz arrived from Bayer Leverkusen in a deal that could end up being worth £116m.

And Alexander Isak was added on a £125m deal from Newcastle - ending the Premier League champions’ long chase for a No9.

But Isak wasn’t the only striker to arrive at Anfield over the summer. Hugo Ekitike, 23, was also brought to the club in a deal worth an initial £69m.
Liverpool complete swoop for Ekitike
The France international has gone from strength to strength over the last couple of seasons - excelling on loan at Eintracht Frankfurt before completing a permanent deal with the Bundesliga side in summer 2024.
He’s established himself among the game’s elite in that time - following a disappointing spell with Paris Saint-Germain. Ekitike’s rise continues apace on Merseyside - scoring in his first two Premier League outings and earning his first senior call-up to Les Bleues.
And this is a calculated signing from the Reds.
While it’s been speculated that Liverpool ONLY moved for the former Reims jewel once Newcastle were quite advanced on a deal - the groundwork was put in long before that.
Liverpool believe Ekitike will be a megastar
Previous reports indicate Ekitike was on the radar since his days as a youngster at Reims - even before he completed his first major move to PSG (initially on loan) in 2022.
And now the Telegraph claims that Liverpool were fixated on Ekitike as a striker target - initially reaching out to Frankfurt in January and were ready to push on with a deal if he’d stayed with the Bundesliga club during the summer.
Furthermore, while some might reckon £69m is a lot of money for an uncapped player with no Premier League experience, Liverpool know what they are getting.
Hughes has signed a player of the highest calibre - and one with the potential to go even HIGHER.
Ekitike a long-term Liverpool goal
In fact, it’s claimed Liverpool have got a potential MEGASTAR on their hands following the arrival of Ekitike.
Given the stars of recent Liverpool seasons have been world-class players like Alisson, Mohamed Salah and Virgil van Dijk, very special things indeed can be expected from Ekitike.
“They believe Hugo Ekitike has the potential to become a megastar, having made the first moves for him last January, and would have revisited the Isak deal mid-season or next summer,” the report reads.
“Ekitike was heading to Anfield long before the official confirmation, Newcastle’s bid for him in the days preceding Liverpool’s deal met with bewilderment by the club’s recruiters.”
Reds see Ekitike as a multi-functional forward
Ekitike will likely share duties with Alexander Isak in the No9 position - given options to Arne Slot as well as providing healthy competition between the two new men.
But the Anfield side also see something else in Ekitike - ensuring he will always have a role to play.
“Ekitike is a multi-functional forward, first impressing Liverpool’s scouts when he played as a No 10 at Eintracht Frankfurt behind Omar Marmoush,” the report states. “Liverpool believe he can also excel as a wide striker.”
