Liverpool have got to cancel a £35m deal before things get even worse. It's not too late to back out.

Liverpool struck an awful lot of deals in 2025. They embarked on a remarkable squad overhaul, spending over £450m on new players while bringing in over £200m.

We saw two record signings at full-back, a record-signing as a striker in Hugo Ekitiké and the club record broken twice as Florian Wirtz and Alexander Isak arrived. The latter also broke that Ekitiké record.

The sales were notable, too. Liverpool moved on several homegrown players, with Caoimhin Kelleher leaving for Brentford all the way back in May.

Jarell Quansah soon left, too, joining Bayer Leverkusen for a large fee. The pair were two of the best homegrown talents at Liverpool and the best, Trent Alexander-Arnold, as another exit.

There was another major homegrown exit, too - Harvey Elliott. And that's a story that may have another few turns yet.

Harvey Elliott's toxic situation

The Athletic have run a piece on Harvey Elliott as he continues to struggle with Aston Villa. The midfielder is on loan there from Liverpool but it's a bit more complex than that.

Villa have a compulsory buy option of around £35m but only if Elliott plays 10 times for them. It's now starting to look quite worrying in that regard.

Elliott has played six times this season - a number of games far, far below what was expected. In fact, it's on the decline.

He's played just four minutes across the last six weeks. Villa didn't put him on in either of their latest UEFA Europa League clashes against Go Ahead Eagles or Maccabi Tel Aviv and Elliott wasn't in the matchday squad against Bournemouth this weekend.

Now, to us, that comes across as Villa being quite willing to leave Elliott out so he doesn't play 10 fixtures. They've got three more 'free' matches out of him and we're getting the impression that they'll spread them across the rest of the season if they have to.

They won't want to pay £35m for a player they don't want, after all. So with that in mind, Liverpool must look to cancel the deal in January.

They won't get that £35m anyway if things are heading the way they seem to be. All that would happen is a dramatic depreciation in Elliott's value, while he's also lose an entire season of development.

But above all, Liverpool could use him! They lack cover for Mo Salah and Elliott's ability to unlock defences on the edge of the box would be very valuable this season.

So not only is Elliott better-suited to this Liverpool team that Villa, he'd also play more. And not see his value completely tank.

It just makes complete sense to us. Call it quits and see what Elliott can do in Red for the rest of the season. He's a much, much better player than people seem to think and can certainly be a valuable asset for Liverpool.

Stop wasting everyone's time with this toxic loan deal and get him back.
