Liverpool are close to signing Florian Wirtz from Bayer Leverkusen. It's likely a record transfer - but one that the Reds know is actually a bargain.

Fabrizio Romano is among those saying Liverpool pushed on with their deal to sign Florian Wirtz on Tuesday. The Reds are in talks with Bayer Leverkusen and put a deal on the table worth around €100m.

Now, we imagine that price will rise a bit as negotiations continue. Reports have long said Leverkusen wanted around €150m for their star asset - the final figure surely lands between the two.

Regardless, though, Liverpool hope to seal the deal at around €100m and that absolutely feels like a bargain. Which is also completely ridiculous to say.

Liverpool have never made a deal in that range before, while there's every chance that this ends up being the English transfer record. That's something the Reds haven't done since 1995.

Wirtz, though, really is the kind of player you justify this spend for. In fact, he's worth far more than that €100m figure.

Florian Wirtz's true valuation

Now, Liverpool know they can secure a bit of a reduced fee here. Leverkusen are eager not to sell to Bayern Munich - something they may be forced into in 2026.

Getting this deal done to anyone but Bayern is in their best interest. It leaves them a little more flexible with the fee than most would be for a player of this magnitude.

So that, on its own, tells Liverpool Wirtz is worth more than they'll end up paying. But his stats tell them that, too.

Wirtz is an extraordinary player and we could go on and on about his incredible numbers here. Instead, we won't focus on the numbers specifically, but more about the difference between this season and the previous campaign.

Leverkusen were undefeated Bundesliga champions last season in a truly sensational campaign. Wirtz was at the centre of that but the big question facing teams was whether it could happen again.

After all, it was an unusually brilliant campaign and one that couldn't really be replicated. Only, Wirtz pretty much has.

22 goals and assists last season were followed by 22 goals and assists this season. His xG per 90 last season was 0.34 vs 0.36 this campaign.

It's a similar story for assists, too. 0.29 to 0.27. His shot-creating actions were at an incredible high last season of above 6.3 and while that's 'dropped' to 5.66 this term, that's still significantly higher than any Liverpool player.

And that's the real magic with Wirtz. Leverkusen have gotten worse this season, as expected, but his numbers have been the same or thereabouts. It suggests he improved in reaction to the team dropping off.

That's what will have Liverpool believing he's worth €100m and then some. A 22-year-old who produces some of the best numbers in Europe proving he's actually on an upward trend, and that the quality of the team doesn't appear to have much bearing on his output.

Plug that into a Liverpool team that's already excelling and you've got something truly special. And you'd pay a lot more than €100m to get it.

German fan site Bayern Space on X regularly stated the fee is 100m euros (84m quid) with 20-30m in bonuses i.e potential total cost of 110m quid. Not bad business seeing as we are two years on from Rice, Fernandez and Caicedo in the 100m+ range - and they are all more DM's.

Saying that I hope we have some dosh left for a proper, robust DM as we seriously struggle when it gets quick and physical and it seemingly affects our whole set up with an exposed defence and disjointed attack without someone to knit it all together.
