Liverpool will move a step closer to an incredible deal for Florian Wirtz. It all comes down to Darwin Nunez.

Fabrizio Romano made that clear this week. The journalist claims Liverpool are ready to wait for Wirtz, even if it ends in failure - something Manchester City were not prepared to do.

And the Reds do have an advantage in this race with Bayern Munich. Bayer Leverkusen are far, far happier to sell to Liverpool, while the English champions appear to have a lot more spending power this summer.

That’s a very important factor here. Leverkusen want well over £100m for their star player but they’re only going to get it this summer.

Wirtz will only have one year left on his contract in 2026 and the chances of him moving for £100m then are minimal. Bayern may actually be hoping he doesn’t move at all this year so they can snap him up at a discount next summer.

But Liverpool feel they can convince Wirtz and spend the money this summer when Bayern can’t. They do require a little help there, though.

Darwin Nunez to the rescue

£100m is an awful lot of money, even if Liverpool’s finances are strong. Making things even more difficult is Jeremie Frimpong also arriving from Leverkusen and the continued pursuit of Milos Kerkez.

Liverpool could be set to spend over £200m - and the window isn’t even open yet.

They don’t have that kind of money just lying around. Sales are required to drum up the funds and while plenty are expected, none are truly guaranteed.

The most likely big-money exit, though, is Darwin Nunez. Anfield Watch exclusively revealed back in January that there was a bid from Saudi Arabia, though it was ultimately rejected.

Liverpool do intend to sell in this window, however. But interest from Saudi doesn’t guarantee big money when you’re openly looking to sell.

What helps in that regard is Atletico Madrid wanting the player and Nunez’s apparent approval. Cadena SER claims the Uruguayan would happily move to the club - and that means a bidding war.

A bidding war involving a Saudi team means one thing and that’s a large transfer fee. Securing that suddenly makes the Wirtz fee a lot easier to handle and moves the Reds a step closer to their ultimate goal here.
