Liverpool have got so many problems right now it’s hard to know where to start addressing them.

The £450m spending spree conducted by sporting director Richard Hughes over the summer transfer window has yet to pay any dividends.

Arne Slot’s side look a long way off the standards they set for themselves during the 2024/25 Premier League season - which concluded with the Reds as champions.

Liverpool look unbalanced - short of proper options in key positions despite their squad overhaul. Their ambitions for the season - defending the Premier League title - have all gone up in smoke and the Anfield club have slumped to the bottom half of the table.

Liverpool need better right-back and midfielder

Slot has overseen a run of six league defeats in seven matches - and Liverpool are in danger of spiralling further. It’s clear more work needs to be done on the squad and two positions could do with attention.

Signing Jeremie Frimpong and renewing Conor Bradley’s contract were two actions taken that should have sorted out a post-Trent Alexander-Arnold problem at right-back.

Only it’s not worked out like that with the pair currently injured and neither proving convincing as a permanent replacement for Trent.

And more energy is required in midfield - where Alexis Mac Allister has been a long way short of his best form.

Liverpool to move for Federico Valverde

One player who could potentially help solve both problems is Real Madrid’s Federico Valverde.

The Uruguayan, 27, first joined Madrid back in 2016 - making his debut for the Spanish capital club in 2018. Since then the tireless midfielder has grown into a key part of the system at the Bernabeu - becoming club vice-captain this season.

He last renewed his contract back in 2023 and his current terms expire in 2029.

Liverpool would pay €150m for Valverde

A report in Fichajes suggests that Liverpool are prepared to pay as much as €150m to land Valverde.

Right now there are no indications that Madrid are considering a sale of their two-time Champions League winner but he is a player that Liverpool could certainly use.

A central midfielder by trade, his all-action combative style would be a shot in the arm for Arne Slot’s side - and he is a more than capable performer at right-back.

In fact he has been preferred to Trent Alexander-Arnold in that position of late - although Trent came back into the side to suffer at the hands of Elche in a 2-2 draw on Sunday.
