Liverpool suffered a cruel blow late in the transfer window - with Marc Guehi being forced to stay at Crystal Palace on deadline day.

The formalities of the deal to take the England international to Anfield had been concluded - but at the 11th hour the FA Cup holders pulled out.

Citing a failure to replace the 25-year-old - as well as concerns over Oliver Glasner’s reaction to the move - club chairman Steve Parish was left with little choice other than to call off the transfer.

Liverpool had fixed up a deal worth an initial ÂŁ35m to Palace - plus another ÂŁ10m in add-ons according to Fabrizio Romano. That represents remarkable value for an international calibre Premier League captain.

Liverpool could move again for Guehi

But Liverpool will have to move on with the first half of the season at least with senior centre-back options including Virgil van Dijk, Ibrahima Konate, Joe Gomez and Giovanni Leoni.

Of course it’s been speculated that the Anfield club could return as soon as JANUARY for the Eagles’ captain - who is out of contract in 2026. If Palace don’t agree to sell Guehi in the new year then they face losing him on a free transfer next summer. T

he former Chelsea stopper will have his pick of clubs by then - with the Reds, Real Madrid and Bayern Munich all reportedly eyeing Guehi on a free.

There exists an opportunity for Liverpool to strike in January however - with a deal for Guehi already quite far down the line this summer.

Romano: No guarantees of Guehi bid

But don’t take it for granted that the Merseysiders under sporting director Richard Hughes will strike a deal.

Fabrizio Romano is offering no guarantees over a Guehi bid - suggesting either Liverpool will remain satisfied with their current array of central defenders or else they will be prepared to look elsewhere for reinforcements.

“At the moment nothing is decided,” he wrote in his GIVEMESPORT newsletter. “I can guarantee that. Liverpool will keep Guehi on their list for sure, but it's not already decided to go for him in January.”

Konate futute remains uncertain

Liverpool were interested in Guehi owing to uncertainty over the contract situation of Konate. He is out of contract in 2026 - having not yet put pen to paper on a new deal.

Konate, 26, has been tipped to move to Real Madrid on a free transfer - potentially opening a gap for Guehi in the centre of Liverpool’s defence.
