Liverpool missed out on the signing of Marc Guehi on transfer deadline day.

Despite agreeing to sign the Crystal Palace captain for an initial £35m, the FA Cup holders pulled out of the deal at the 11th hour.

That frustrated Liverpool’s chase for the 25-year-old - who is out of contract in 2026. The big problem for Liverpool is now they have effectively lost their clear run at the England international.

Where once he pledged his future to the Premier League champions, all of a sudden the Merseysiders are now just one side among many in the chasing pack.

Liverpool will have to compose a very attractive package to land the defender - who promises to become the biggest Bosman deal in next summer’s transfer window.

Fabrizio Romano is now predicting a CRAZY transfer battle for Guehi - and reveals it could well come down to whichever team puts together the best financial package.

Romano: It could come down to finances

“Liverpool are one of the clubs in conversations to sign the player on a free for summer 2026. But it’s not only Liverpool, it’s several clubs being involved in this race,” he tells his YouTube audience.

“So there’s going to be a crazy battle. I think now it is still early to say there is this club or the other club. There will be plenty of clubs, more than five or six clubs interested in Marc Guehi.

“It’s a big opportunity. And so get ready for a big battle. It’s going to be also a financial battle.

“It’s going to be about the project of course but also a financial battle to try to reach an agreement with Marc Guehi on the salary and on the signing fee.”

Liverpool's centre-back shortage

Liverpool could have dearly used Guehi in the early part of this season. Ibrahima Konate has been struggling for form - and is out of contract in summer 2026 too.

Meanwhile, the long-term future of Joe Gomez remains under scrutiny and Giovanni Leoni is not expected to play again for a year.
