Liverpool now expect €100m forward to replace Luis Diaz

Liverpool and Luis Diaz look to be reaching the end of their relationship. The Colombian forward was a key part of the 2024/25 Premier League title win under Arne Slot but is set to depart this summer.

Diaz, 28, joined Liverpool back in January 2022 from Porto for an initial £37.5m. It’s fair to say fans waited a while to see the winger at his consistent best - but he scored 13 goals in the top flight last season to help the Reds to the title.

But the problem for Diaz is his contract. He remains on the same terms he signed when he completed his transfer from the Portuguese league.

And Liverpool sporting director Richard Hughes is not minded to furnish him with a contract which meets the Colombian international’s demands.

€100m Diaz a target for Bayern

He would like £140k to £150k per week to renew with Liverpool - and the club have given NO indication that are willing to match that sum.

And with his deal expiring in 2027, Liverpool could opt to sell while Diaz’s value remains high and fund a replacement from his transfer fee.

Bayern Munich have been told to pay €100m for Diaz while Barcelona look out of the equation at this stage.

Should Bayern - or Al-Nassr in Saudi Arabia - reach Liverpool’s target then he will be on his way. And if Diaz goes a decision will need to be made on filling his berth in the squad.

How will Liverpool replace Diaz?

Will Cody Gakpo and perhaps Florian Wirtz be enough?

Will Rio Ngumoha step up?

Or will a replacement come from the transfer market?

The dream would be to add Rodrygo Goes from Real Madrid - an old Liverpool target who opted for the Bernabeu when leaving Santos back in 2019.

The Brazil international has won TWO Champions League titles since then but looks likely to be squeezed out by Xabi Alonso this summer.

If Diaz goes, Rodrygo will come in

And a report from L’Equipe now claims that Rodrygo is the most realistic prospect Liverpool have in mind for replacing Diaz.

“If Luis Díaz (28, contract to 2027) departs—as expected—he’s likely to be replaced by Rodrygo (24, under contract with Real Madrid until 2028),” the report reads.

Madrid will not let Rodrygo go on the cheap.

He is valued - like Diaz - at €100m. The upside is Rodrygo is very versatile, capable of playing all across the frontline and in an array of formations.

He is good enough to start on the left but also gives options as a right winger and a false nine.

First though we need a resolution in the Diaz saga.

He is with the rest of the travelling party for the pre-season Asian tour. We could see movement on Diaz’s future soon - and once that is sorted out we could be getting a new No7 in the shape of Rodrygo.
