Liverpool get contract WARNING from Real Madrid

Liverpool have reportedly opened contract talks with two key players in Ryan Gravenberch and Dominik Szoboszlai.

The midfield pair were integral to the 2024/25 Premier League title win under Arne Slot and plans are afoot to keep them at the club long term.

Gravenberch and Szoboszlai were part of the 2023 midfield revamp - which saw several top players depart.

Jordan Henderson, Fabinho, Naby Keita, Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain and James Milner all left Anfield with Wataru Endo and Alexis Mac Allister also coming in.

Szoboszlai developing into world's best

Macca, Gravenberch and Szoboszlai all signed contracts until 2028 and time is beginning to tick down on those deals.

At the end of the current campaign they will all have only two full seasons left on their contracts and Liverpool must secure their futures.

In the case of Szoboszlai in particular it’s going to take a sizeable pay increase in order for the Hungarian to put pen to paper.

Currently making £120k per week, the 25-year-old’s midfield peers around Europe are making up to three times that amount.

Liverpool need to pay Szoboszlai what he's worth

No doubt he and his advisors will be aware of his worth when it comes to contract talks and if Liverpool believe he is one of the world’s best then they are going to have to pay him accordingly.

If talks drag on - and the Hungary captain reaches the last two years of his deal - then sporting director Richard Hughes might begin to sweat.

And the Reds have been served another contract reminder over Szoboszlai from Real Madrid - with the 15-time European champions ready to reactivate their long-standing interest in the midfielder.

Szoboszlai back on Madrid's radar

That’s according to a new report in Fichajes - which claims the Premier League champions are going to pull out all the stops to secure a renewal.

“Real Madrid have been monitoring Dominik Szoboszlai for years,” the report reads.

“His recent development and rise to become one of the most complete midfielders this season have put him back on the club's radar.

“Liverpool will do everything possible to secure their midfielder, aware that his development makes him one of the most sought-after players on the continent.”

Now the report also adds that Szoboszlai’s value currently sits at €85m. In the current market that might buy his left foot.

Given his versatility and importance to the Liverpool project it would take a lot more than that before Hughes would even look up from his desk.

But the longer a contract impasse goes on the more danger the Reds will get into over Szoboszlai. Let’s hope this negotiation - as well as the one over Gravenberch - go smoothly.
