Incredible U-turn could see midfielder agree new deal
These are tricky times for Liverpool over Curtis Jones.
The 25-year-old midfielder has got an expiring contract with his current deal running out in summer 2027. This summer therefore represents the club’s only real chance to make some money on the homegrown playmaker.
England international Jones was the subject of an enquiry from Inter Milan in January but Liverpool opted against a deal as they did not want to leave themselves short.
The Italian champions are back knocking on Richard Hughes’ door for the two-time Premier League title winner. But the latest reports are that Inter are beginning to test the Liverpool sporting director’s patience.
Inter testing Liverpool's patience
There is a clear asking price set for Jones - reported to be between £30m and £35m. Inter’s latest bid for the midfielder reached only €25m (around £22m) - with the outgoing Premier League champions turning down that verbal attempt.
Unless Inter get far closer to the magic number then Liverpool have been reported to be willing to keep Jones around and even risk him running his contract down.
Reds’ decision-makers would rather lose him for nothing next year than to do an unfavourable deal with the Serie A side over Jones.
And for the first time it’s now been mooted in a report in the Athletic that Jones could even sign a new deal with his boyhood club if he ends up staying.
Liverpool ready to hand new contract to Jones
“Talks over a new contract stalled and there are currently no active discussions,” the report reads.
“Liverpool would still be keen to explore a new deal if the gap can be bridged between the player’s expectations and what the club are willing to offer.”
Jones last renewed his contract back in 2022 when he was a marginal figure in the midfield under Jurgen Klopp. Since then he has grown in stature and prominence and would no doubt like a new contract to reflect his current standing.
With Ryan Gravenberch receiving a new deal worth £277k per week and Dominik Szoboszlai’s demands for a new contract said to be around £300k per week Jones will not want to leave himself out of pocket with a new deal at Anfield.
Jones' demands for new deal not yet met
But there now seem to be indications that Liverpool won’t play ball with Inter unless they get serious about a new bid. And that opens the door to the Scouser remaining at the club beyond 2027.
Jones was unable to win his place as a starting midfielder under Arne Slot - often featuring out of position at right-back.
He is however a useful squad player and a member of the first-team contingent who could be given a chance to impress new boss Andoni Iraola in preseason.
