Liverpool make CRUCIAL decision over Andy Robertson contract renewal

Liverpool signed Milos Kerkez in a deal worth around £40m from Bournemouth last summer.

The 21-year-old was regarded as one of the finest emerging left-backs around - with sporting director Richard Hughes wasting no time in securing a deal for the Hungarian.

Life at Anfield has not got off to the easiest of starts for Kerkez however, suffering the indignity of a couple of early substitutions - including during the first half of a league game versus Burnley.

Deputy Andy Robertson - at the club since 2017 - briefly won back his place in the team but is finding Premier League minutes increasingly hard to come by despite Kerkez’s struggles.

Although it’s early in Kerkez’s first season it’s been suggested that left-back may well be a position Liverpool decision-makers once again seek to fortify next summer.

Robertson, 31, will be out of contract at the end of the season - in June 2026 - and a report in Spain claims that the Scot won’t be given a new deal.

With Kostas Tsimikas expected to wrap up a permanent deal to Roma - and Owen Beck once again struggling with injury - Liverpool may well see fit to add a left-back.

“Liverpool is considering not renewing Robertson's contract and moving on from a period of contract,” reports Fichajes.

“The sporting leadership is determined: this summer, Liverpool's left flank will be one of the focal points of a strategic operation that will define the next competitive cycle.”

It would be a shock to see Kerkez ousted so soon into his Anfield tenure but signing a deputy would be no surprise if Robbo is to leave.

A versatile player - who could play left-back or centre-back - may be the solution. But if the club are resolved to decline Robertson a renewal then they will need a new player in the position.

The Scotland captain came close to leaving Anfield over summer with Atletico Madrid interested in adding his experience and leadership to their ranks.

He ultimately stayed put, determined to see out his Liverpool contract and even push Hughes into a new contract. Let’s see how this one plays out.
