Liverpool reportedly feel an agreement has been reached with an incredible star. Where do they go from here?

Liverpool face a difficult situation with Ibrahima Konate right now. The Frenchman is out of contract in the summer and attempts to renew his deal have been unsuccessful thus far.

Now, that could change. Liverpool remain determined to re-sign Konate and are reportedly in talks right now.

Though, those talks have been going on for around a year now. Things don't appear to be any closer and perhaps there's a very good reason for that.

Marca's latest report on the matter suggests Liverpool believe Konate has some sort of commitment with Real Madrid. Los Blancos haven't been shy, through the press at least, in pushing for the Frenchman.

The reports makes it clear that Konate is their no.1 pick as a new centre-back in 2026, especially after William Saliba renewed with Arsenal. That may have gone as far as actually having some sort of verbal agreement, it seems.

Liverpool's difficult position

Liverpool can't afford to lose Konate. Although, they also can't afford to pay him at a level they don't believe he's worth.

That's essentially their entire ethos with wages. Players get rewarded for elite performances but no one is paid beyond what they're worth. Change that for Konate and everything falls apart.

That creates a strange situation, though. Konate is, after all, Liverpool's best-bet at replacing Virgil van Dijk. There can't be much of a question about that.

But he's also not really that close to Van Dijk's level and the Reds won't want to pay him similarly. Of course, no one is at the Dutchman's level and we imagine Liverpool will reduce their wage bill when he steps aside.

The club needs to decide what Konate is worth to them, then. But at this stage, does that even matter? If there is a commitment to Real Madrid, perhaps there's nothing they can actually do.

That would necessitate movement towards a different centre-back in order to replace the no.5. And it would certainly need to be a big name.
