Blockbuster Liverpool change COMING as deal gets closer

Liverpool have a major change on the way if reports are to be believed. A blockbuster deal is getting closer.

Reports are suggesting that Liverpool have a deal on the way for January as they look to continue their rebuild. There’s a consensus that the rebuild needs to continue, of course, after the Reds sunk to yet another defeat this weekend.

Nottingham Forest went to Anfield and won 3-0, controlling the vast majority of the game. The massive summer spend simply hasn’t worked - or at least, the work isn’t done.

And so the start of this week brings claims that Liverpool are now close to signing Marc Guehi from Crystal Palace. The defender was supposed to move to Anfield back at the end of the summer, only for Palace to collapse the deal at the last minute.

Liverpool’s interest remains and they hope to strike a deal in the winter to get Guehi in before his contract expires. Christian Falk of Bild claims the deal for Guehi is ‘very close’ to being sealed.

And with that, Arne Slot can implement a game-changing alternation to his team.

The big defensive shift

Guehi is not joining Liverpool without guarantees over playing time. But the Reds also want to re-sign Ibrahima Konate, whose contract expires this summer.

Honestly, it all points to Liverpool wanting a major shift in defence, almost certainly towards a back three. That's something that makes even more sense when you consider the players they signed in the summer.

Liverpool brought in a centre-back for big money in Giovanni Leoni who would have played a bigger role if not for the injury. Their full-back signings, Milos Kerkez and Jeremie Frimpong, are really wingbacks and used to playing with three centre-backs.

Florian Wirtz and Hugo Ekitike both came from back-three formations, too. There's also the fact that Liverpool didn't sign a replacement for Luis Diaz, nor did they sign any midfielders - two suggestions that they're planning on cutting back their midfield in favour of an extra defender.

If Wirtz is to play how he did with Bayer Leverkusen, after all, it would be him operating from the 'left', but slightly narrower to allow for a wingback. Alternatively, Liverpool could ditch a left-winger altogether and use Wirtz behind two centre-forwards.

Liverpool's summer transfer business always pointed towards a back three being the plan. Signing Guehi would suggest the same - and we think that's the big plan on the way.
