Brutal truth comes to light about Andy Robertson contract offer
Liverpool have got a contract issue to solve over Andy Robertson.
The Scotland international, 32, has been at Anfield since 2017 - joining in a bargain £8m deal from Hull City. Robbo has since established himself as one of the greatest left-backs in club history - winning all there is to win in the game.
But time waits for no man and Robertson is due to LEAVE the club as things stand in summer 2026. No new deal has yet been produced for Robertson - who was linked with a £5m move to Tottenham in January.
It is expected the London club will come back for Robertson when he becomes a free agent and that interest is now set to be matched by AC Milan.
That’s according to a report in Calcio Mercato which claims the Rossoneri want to recruit the left-back as a replacement for Pervis Estupinan.
Robbo's sky-high wage demands
However the report also states that Milan have concerns over Robertson’s age and wage. At 32 his best years are likely to be behind him and his wage demands are put at just under £170k per week.
And if Richard Hughes were of the mind to give Robbo a new contract it’s those figures that should give him pause for thought.
Liverpool spent £40m last summer on Milos Kerkez with the 22-year-old Hungary international set to become the club’s long-term left-back investment.
Robertson is going to be second fiddle - no matter what happens - and those wages for a reserve player are simply unjustifiable.
Liverpool have got plenty of young left-backs
There won’t be many back-up left-backs making up to £170k per week in the Premier League and Liverpool’s wage bill has already soared to record levels.
Losing Mohamed Salah will help to bring it down and in the cold light of day there will be cheaper options to fill in at left-back instead of Robertson.
Players like Calum Scanlon, Luke Chambers, Clae Ewing and Owen Beck are all on the cusp of a breakthrough and should be able to deputise for Kerkez next term.
And if Robertson feels like he can get those wage demands met elsewhere then he is perfectly entitled to do so. But Milan see this deal as too rich for their tastes and perhaps Liverpool need to too.
