Not JUST Marc Guehi: Liverpool to fight Tottenham in deal for another Premier League captain
Liverpool have been tipped to move for a central defender in the upcoming transfer windows.
The Reds are down to only THREE senior fit centre-back options following the injury to Giovanni Leoni. The 18-year-old Italian - signed from Parma for £26m - suffered a torn ACL on debut and will be out for a year.
Virgil van Dijk, Ibrahima Konate and Joe Gomez will now have to share duties between them from now until the January transfer window at least.
A failure to land Marc Guehi looks all the worse in hindsight with sporting director Richard Hughes coming up short on transfer deadline day.
Liverpool sounding out centre-backs
Liverpool offered an initial £35m for the Crystal Palace captain which was turned down because the FA Cup holders could not source a replacement.
Guehi, 25, is out of contract in 2026 and the Premier League champions are now likely to find themselves in an almighty transfer scramble for the England defender.
Tottenham have been mooted as a potential destination for Guehi and Liverpool are ready to go head-to-head with the North London side for ANOTHER Premier League captain.
Spurs and Liverpool fight for Collins
Nathan Collins, 24, has gone from strength to strength since joining Brentford from Wolves for a record £24m fee back in 2023.
The Ireland defender completed every single minute of last season’s Premier League campaign and was promoted to Bees’ skipper by new coach Keith Andrews over the summer.
Under contract until 2029, it appears that Collins will become the next blockbuster Brentford sale following on from the likes of Ivan Toney, Bryan Mbeumo and Yoane Wissa in recent times.
Further interest in Collins predicted
Spurs have got a long-standing interest with current head coach Thomas Frank having overseen Collins’ development while in charge at the Gtech Community Stadium.
But Collins is now a familiar name on the computer screens of Liverpool’s recruiters - with one report in Football Insider suggesting that 2026 could be the year he makes a move to Anfield.
“They [Brentford] don’t want to lose Nathan Collins,” a report reads.
“There was a bit of interest in the summer from Tottenham. Liverpool were mentioned as well as they were looking at a centre-back.
“If he continues to impress for Brentford and as he’s shown already at such a young age, he’s got those leadership qualities as well, being captain at the club, I’m sure there’ll be clubs monitoring the situation and maybe in the summertime there could be further interest in him.”
Collins has played 32 times for Ireland, scoring twice, and is a vital component nowadays for both club and country.
