Darwin Nunez’s future at Liverpool has never been less certain, but the task of replacing one of the world’s most expensive strikers won’t be easy.

A number of potential targets have been identified, with some of the most promising forwards in Europe among those on Richard Hughes’ shortlist.

One of the superstars repeatedly linked with an Anfield switch is Benjamin Sesko, who could well be the man to revolutionise Arne Slot’s attack.

Benjamin Sesko could be Liverpool’s man

According to a recent report from Spanish outlet AS, Nunez has been informed by Liverpool that he isn’t in their plans for next season and a move to Atletico Madrid could be on the cards.

This would of course leave Liverpool searching for a replacement, and the report names RB Leipzig's Sesko as one of the favourites.

The Slovenian forward scored a stunning goal from outside the area to put his side 1-0 up against Bayern Munich on Saturday, a type of goal the 21-year-old is renowned for.

Despite his young age, Sesko has managed 21 goals and six assists in 43 appearances this season, and has become known for his superior aerial ability as well as his desire to run with the ball.

A reported price tag of around €100 million could complicate matters, but Liverpool are in a very healthy financial situation heading into what could be an era defining summer.

How does Sesko compare to Liverpool’s other options?

Despite standing at almost two metres tall, the Slovenian is an accomplished dribbler. In fact, Sesko ranks in the 88th percentile for successful take-ons per 90 minutes among forwards in Europe’s big five leagues.

An impressive 47.1% of the 21-year-old's shots are on target, better than Alexander Isak, Hugo Ekitike and Nunez. He also boasts an aerial dual win rate of 56.8%, again better than Isak, Ekitike and Nunez.

One area that Sesko does fall short in is his shot volume, taking less shots per 90 than the other strikers mentioned.

RB Liepzig’s frontman could also improve his chance creation. He only ranks in the 25th percentile for shot-creating actions per 90 among his peers in Europe’s big five leagues.

This wouldn’t necessarily be a problem in Liverpool’s set up though, with a number of other players tasked with creating the chances for Sekso and Mohamed Salah to put away.

Would Sesko be a good fit for Liverpool?

At just 21, Sesko has a tonne of upside. He could develop into one of the best strikers in world football and is already capable of scoring worldclass goals, but the Slovenian still feels very raw.

Similar to the Nunez that arrived in Merseyside from Benfica in 2022, Sesko is ready to be moulded into a truly elite striker, but you just have to look at the Uruguayan's Liverpool career to see the risk associated with such a move.

Sesko could be a cheaper alternative to the likes of Isak and Ekitike and, if Liverpool can get the best out of him, he definitely has the potential to be just as effective a striker as anyone in football.

Hughes is yet to put a foot wrong at Liverpool and, if he has identified Sesko as the man to lead the Reds’ frontline, the likelihood is Sesko will prove to be a worthwhile addition to Slot’s side.

If Sesko does move to Anfield, Slot will be tasked with trying to increase the striker’s shot volume whilst maintaining his impressive accuracy and, if this can be achieved, Sesko in a Liverpool shirt could be a frightening prospect for the rest of the league.
