Liverpool last had a midfield overhaul back in 2023. Out went big names like Fabinho, Jordan Henderson, Naby Keita, James Milner and Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain.

Jurgen Klopp and then-sporting director Jorg Schmadtke completed a midfield masterclass in securing deals for Alexis Mac Allister, Dominik Szoboszlai, Ryan Gravenberch and Wataru Endo as replacements.

But three years on and it looks like the Premier League champions need another refit. Mac Allister appears to be a fading force while there are no guarantees over the future of Endo.

Liverpool have got contract plans for both Gravenberch and Szoboszlai - but it remains to be seen what happens over Curtis Jones whose current deal expires in 2027.

Liverpool admire Eduardo Camavinga

The Anfield club therefore could decide to recruit more midfielders - either in what remains of the January transfer window or else next summer.

And one name above all others stands out right now with the Merseysiders having a unique opportunity to do a deal for one of the very best in the world.

Eduardo Camavinga has been at Real Madrid since 2021 but looks set to depart before his current deal expires in 2029.

The 23-year-old didn’t manage to make himself an indispensable option under former head coach Xabi Alonso.

Arne Slot wants Camavinga deal

And following Madrid’s latest debacle - Copa del Rey defeat to Albacete - it’s been suggested that the France international will be heading for the exit door.

A report in Fichajes claims that Camavinga could be available for around €70m to €80m - and that Arne Slot has ALREADY approved his signing.

Camavinga can play as a holding midfielder as well as further forward as a No8. He has few peers in Europe’s top five leagues as a progressive passer - and can also fill in at left-back if required.

Liverpool have had a close look at Camavinga in the past but have so far held off on doing a deal.

But the time could now be right for the former Rennes player to join Liverpool - and he could be the first major midfield acquisition for sporting director Richard Hughes.
