Arne Slot drawing up plans for post-Mo Salah future
The post-Mohamed Salah Liverpool future is taking shape - whether the player in question likes it or not.
Following a sequence of poor club performances - and a lack of goals and assists - the Egyptian King was once again DROPPED by Reds’ head coach Arne Slot for a Champions League game.
Having watched from the bench on matchday two against Galatasaray, the 33-year-old was once again amongst the substitutes for the clash against Eintracht Frankfurt in the Waldstadion on Wednesday night.
The idea from the off was to use Jeremie Frimpong high and wide on the right wing in the buildup but those plans went up in smoke due to the Dutchman suffering an early injury.
But that didn’t deter Slot. He could have put Salah on and used Dominik Szoboszlai from the right-back position instead of Frimpong. It was Conor Bradley who came on however - with Slot maintaining several options across the frontline in possession.
Arne Slot resists the urge to use Salah
At various stages, the Premier League champions had as many as FIVE players ahead of the ball when either Curtis Jones or Dominik Szoboszlai were in possession and looking for a forward pass.
You could see Cody Gakpo from the left and then Hugo Ekitike, Florian Wirtz, Alexander Isak and Bradley waiting for the ball. Salah was effectively sacrificed for one more body centrally - in this case Isak and Ekitike were playing together up top.
Sadly - again due to injury - we didn’t get to see this for very long. Isak went off at half-time due to another groin problem. And once again Slot ignored the option of using Salah - sending Federico Chiesea on in the Swede’s place.
So where does this leave Salah?
Well it’s bound to annoy him. Salah has been Liverpool’s best player of the modern era - and maybe even of all time.
He’s just signed a new contract - taking him up to 2027 - and having top-scored in every season he’s been at the club he would expect to start every match.
He’s not an easy man to drop - as Jurgen Klopp found out - and we can get a glimpse of what Salah really thinks of his latest treatment due to his conduct on social media.
Salah is NOT undroppable
The two-time African player of the year has changed his headers - removing reference to Liverpool - and his pride will have been hurt. Liverpool scored five goals against Eintracht and Salah was involved in precisely none of them.
In fact he’s not contributed to a club goal since Everton away on September 20 when he added an assist.
Liverpool lost three straight matches in the Premier League following that game with Salah going to 90 minutes twice and playing 85 against Manchester United at the weekend. Right now it’s not working with Salah in the attack - as tough as that might be to say.
This is not to detract from what he’s done for Liverpool over the years - nor take away from his legendary status. But the fact of the matter is that Arne Slot has got to do what’s best for the team - and in this case reputations don’t matter.
Liverpool are under big pressure to deliver - given the scale of their summer spend and the fact they’ve got a title to defend. Salah will play his part, of that there is no doubt.
But if he thinks he cannot be dropped - just like anyone else out of form - then he’s sorely mistaken. Let’s hope he takes the challenge in the best possible fashion - and adds to Slot’s problems in picking a team by getting back in form.
