Liverpool's interest in Florian Wirtz has been long-standing, but the developments in securing a deal for him to join the Reds have all been incredibly fast-paced this week.

One minute it was a battle between Bayern Munich and Manchester City, then all of a sudden Liverpool were involved and now City are out of the race, with the Merseyside club looking set to win.

The all important part has been securing personal terms with the player, because only Wirtz will know which project he prefers. A move to remain in Germany and a move to live in England offer two very different prospects, although the specific finances could be met by either club.

But, it appears as though Arne Slot's vision has won over the 22-year-old and if that is the case, then Bayern didn't really have a chance. As Wirtz will find out, Liverpool is a club unlike any other.

Slot's 'crucial role' in bringing Wirtz on side

According to Fabrizio Romano, who has covered this story extensively, the Liverpool head coach was paramount in turning Wirtz's head towards the new Premier League winners.

In his latest report with Give Me Sport, he said: "Arne Slot had a crucial role in this story, as he spoke to Florian Wirtz personally to present the project and show his vision from a tactical point of view, but also a human one, as he considers Wirtz one of the best players in the world and still with a big potential - Slot pointed at the intention to win big titles together in the upcoming years."

As such, despite three months of feeling convinced that Wirtz would join, Bayern Munich were pipped at the back post by Slot, who was finally in a strong negotiating position since Mohamed Salah and Virgil Van Dijk had confirmed their contract extensions, solidifying the team set-up.

This all comes on the back of the revelation that Slot has identified a specific role for Wirtz to play.

He'll be the club's new No. 10, which is his preferred role which allows him to press high up the pitch and deliver constant key passes into the forwards, something he might have struggled to do at Bayern Munich, given the presence of Jamal Musiala, who has made that playmaking role his own.

In practical terms for Liverpool, this means that Dominik Szoboszlai will likely become more of a No. 8, which might actually suit his game more given the criticism he's faced for his lack of attacking returns this season. The Hungarian's on and off the ball work should still be effective in deeper role.

As such, Liverpool were the more amenable option, and Slot has been able to leapfrog the club to the front of the queue for Wirtz, a quality which Jurgen Klopp used to get away with because of the way he nurtured the players under his management. Liverpool really couldn't have picked anyone better.
