Antoine Semenyo could be Liverpool's REAL Marc Guehi alternative

Liverpool have some major decisions to make. One of them could see Antoine Semenyo arrive instead of Marc Guehi.

Liverpool were supposed to sign Marc Guehi in the summer. The Reds had practically everything agreed, in fact, before Crystal Palace pulled the plug at the last minute.

That left Liverpool without their plan for the upcoming season. It also meant Joe Gomez remained at Anfield - he had a move lined up to AC Milan but it was only going through if Guehi arrived.

So the centre-back setup isn't what Liverpool wanted it to be. Especially now Giovanni Leoni is ruled out for the entire campaign.

And so the Reds absolutely want to sign a new centre-back. Ibrahima Konate's expiring contract essentially forces them into that position at the very least.

The problem is that Guehi may not be as available. The Palace captain will also be out of contract this summer and interest in him continues to grow.

Liverpool may struggle to land him - talk of Real Madrid wanting Guehi is always worrisome. There are certainly alternative options, though they come with an added problem.

One that may push Liverpool into an unconventional replacement.

Liverpool's homegrown problem

Liverpool need to have a certain number of homegrown players in their squad but the summer saw them suffer a major net loss in that regard. Jeremie Frimpong came in as one name, though that wasn’t nearly enough to make up for Trent Alexander-Arnold, Caoimhin Kelleher, Jarell Quansah, Tyler Morton and Harvey Elliott all leaving.

Guehi is homegrown, of course, and that is an enormous boost here. Especially if that plan is for Gomez to leave - Liverpool would avoid sinking into a bigger problem.

But what if Guehi doesn’t join? None of Liverpool’s alternatives appear to be homegrown players and so it’s signings in other positions that would need to fill the void.

Which brings us to Antoine Semenyo. Liverpool are eyeing the winger and his homegrown status may be what pushes the club into a big-money move.

It would essentially need to be a prerequisite for Gomez leaving, certainly, as he can’t depart without a homegrown player coming in. Liverpool certainly need to have eyes on wingers, too, with Mo Salah entering the final year of his contract next summer.

And so Semenyo ticks the right boxes. He’s the ‘replacement’ for Guehi, even if in a completely different position.
