Andy Robertson paves way for reunion with "best mate" ex-Liverpool star
Andy Robertson was subject to intense interest from Tottenham during the winter transfer window.
Spurs were looking to conclude a £5m deal for the left-back - who is out of contract at the end of the season. It wouldn’t have been a surprise to see the 31-year-old leave.
The Scotland international has lost his place to Milos Kerkez following the £40m defender’s arrival from Bournemouth. And he is no doubt keen on playing some first-team football ahead of the FIFA World Cup in summer.
For Liverpool it was a chance to remove £160k per week from the wage bill - and also make a decent return on a player they paid £8m for back in 2017.
But the deal fell through.
Oxlade-Chamberlain joins Celtic
Richard Hughes was unable to attract Roma into giving back Kostas Tsimikas. And without adequate left-back cover it was decided that Robbo would remain.
However with his contract expiring in just a few months it looks all but certain that the Anfield favourite will be LEAVING in summer 2026.
And now a former Liverpool teammate has dropped a tantalising clue about the defender’s potential next move.
Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain, 32, left Liverpool in 2023 to sign for Besiktas in Turkey. Having left the Istanbul giants last summer the midfielder has been searching for his next move.
Robertson paves way for Celtic move
Earlier this week it was confirmed that the Champions League winner had signed for Celtic in the Scottish Premiership - Robertson’s boyhood club.
And upon his unveiling Oxlade-Chamberlain let slip that he had consulted Robertson over the merits of a move to Parkhead.
“I'm best mates with Andy Robertson as well so it didn't take much convincing from him. He told me to get in the car and get up here,” he said according to the Daily Record.
Robertson has been linked with an emotional return to Celtic Park once his Liverpool contract expires. And now that he has talked his good friend into moving north of the border he could be plotting his own arrival once the season ends.
Oxlade-Chamberlain is reported to have inked a deal until the end of the season with an option for 12 months - meaning he would get the chance to link up with his former Liverpool teammate if Robertson’s move goes ahead.
