Liverpool have enjoyed an excellent start to life under Arne Slot, but this doesn’t mean that there isn’t room for improvement.

With the transfer window reopening in two months’ time, the Reds have already started looking at which areas of the squad they can improve.

Almost all of the transfer talk surrounding Liverpool is focused on potential replacements for the team’s out-of-contract trio or on midfield reinforcements, but Slot could be looking to improve in other positions too.

One player that has struggled to find form this season is Andrew Robertson, who has frequently had to share minutes at left-back with Kostas Tsimikas this campaign.

Now a potential target has emerged who could bolster Slot’s options at left-back and even replace Robertson long-term.

Liverpool watching Alvaro Carreras?

Record recently reported that representatives from Liverpool were present to watch Orkun Kokcu in Benfica’s 5-0 victory over Rio Ave.

The report also revealed that the Reds had representatives at Benfica’s 3-1 defeat to Feyenoord in the UEFA Champions League earlier in October.

Although it is entirely possible that Liverpool are indeed keeping an eye on rumoured target Kokcu, it is also possible that it is really left-back Alvaro Carreras, who has been linked to the Reds, that was the focus of the scouting missions.

Carreras played 90 minutes in both of the games that Liverpool watched and could actually be the reason for the scouting mission.

Could Carreras be a replacement for Robertson?

Although the 21-year-old is a Manchester United academy product, he has emerged as a target for Liverpool.

Robertson has struggled at times this season and is now 30-years-old, meaning even if he can rediscover his best form he will begin to decline at some point.

Carreras, known for his excellent passing and ability in the air, could be the ideal Robertson replacement. He played 30 times for Benfica last season and already has two assists in 13 appearances this campaign.

The Spanish U21 international never made a senior appearance for Manchester United and spent time on loan at Preston North End and Granada before making a loan move to Benfica that was made permanent this summer.

The young fullback is valued at €7.8 million by Football Transfers and could prove a smart acquisition in the January transfer window should Liverpool want to boost their strength and left-back.
