Richard Hughes weighing up sale of LEGENDARY £160k per week star

Liverpool have got a couple of high-profile contract problems to solve before next summer.

One concerns Ibrahima Konate. Out of contract in summer 2026, if no new agreement is reached then the Frenchman will be heading out the door for free.

And the same goes for Andy Robertson - although Liverpool’s intentions are not quite as clear-cut. Given Konate’s age - 26 - and his centrality to Arne Slot’s lineup, the club are desperate to protect their investment and sign him up long-term.

In the case of Robertson however, the Scotland captain looks likely to wind down his career over the coming seasons.

Robertson a very expensive back-up

He is now 31 and has already been barged aside for Milos Kerkez.

The sporting director Richard Hughes completed a deal for the Hungarian left-back in summer - paying £40m to former club Bournemouth for the 21-year-old.

That left Robertson as a back-up - although he did briefly consider a move to Atletico Madrid. Ultimately the Scottish captain remained on Merseyside but there is still no real clarity on whether Liverpool intend to offer him a new contract.

He earns well - around £160k per week according to Capology - and those wages are surely unsustainable for a reserve left-back.

That brings us to a couple of recent stories linking Robbo with a move in the January transfer window.

Firstly, Spanish outlet Fichajes concludes that the Reds have taken a decision over Robertson and will seek to offload him in the new year.

Atletico Madrid are bound to be interested as they struggle for consistency in the left-back spot.

And a report from Sportsboom suggests that Celtic are eager to bring Robertson on board to fortify their Scottish title aspirations.

Crucially that report states that Robertson is looking for first-team football - not a likely prospect at Anfield given his inability to break into Arne Slot’s XI since Kerkez arrived.

Losing Robbo would be a blow considering his status as vice-captain with his leadership qualities and experience very much admired at Anfield.

But weigh that up against a small fee - let’s say £5m - and the shedding of a significant portion of the salary budget which could be then put towards Konate's renewal.

Richard Hughes has got a lot to weigh up in the coming weeks and months.
