Alexis Mac Allister believes Liverpool should sign the 'world's best' centre-back. Yes, even better than Virgil van Dijk.

Liverpool have been blessed with Virgil van Dijk since January 2018. The Dutchman signed from Southampton in a club-record transfer and he's paid back every penny.

£75m was an absolutely incredible amount to drop on a centre-back, admittedly. It still is, even if a range of centre-backs nowhere near Van Dijk's level have since gone for that kind of money.

But Liverpool took a chance on themselves, essentially, believing they were correct about the impact he could have. They were right to do so and Van Dijk has led the club to every major trophy since joining.

He'll go down as arguably the greatest centre-back we've ever seen at Anfield, honestly. Only Alan Hansen really rivals him there.

What's perhaps even more incredible than simply being brilliant is that Van Dijk overcame a serious knee injury to recapture his form. The captain was imperious last season, driving Liverpool towards the Premier League title as the league's best defender.

And for us, the best in the world. Though not every one thinks that - not even all of his teammates.

EXCLUSIVE: Wonderkid will join Liverpool first team in pre-season

Alexis Mac Allister wants Cristian Romero

Alexis Mac Allister spoke to TNT Sports while on international duty with Argentina this week. He made some very interesting comments, too, when asked for the international teammate he'd like to join him at Liverpool.

“Oh, Cuti [Cristian Romero]. He’s a player I love,” he said.

“The way he speaks and plays, sometimes you feel like he’s too much because he makes everything so easy. He gives me confidence.

"For me, he’s been the best centre-back in the world for several years."

It's that last bit that really surprises. The best in the world? It's easy to understand that Mac Allister will be a huge fan of the 27-year-old after they won the World Cup and two Copa América together.

But we can't say that last season had us clamouring to sign anyone from Tottenham Hotspur's defence. Quite the opposite, actually.

Then again, Romero did help them win the UEFA Europa League after a brilliant effort in the final against Manchester United. He does win trophies - you've got to give him that.

A move to Liverpool, though? We're not sure he's on the radar right now. We're happy with Van Dijk.
