Arne Slot has had a tough time of it as Liverpool's manager this season.

Most people expected the Anfield outfit be one of the most dominant teams in the world after their summer of spending but unfortunately, that hasn't been the case.

Players such as Alexander Isak, Milos Kerkez and even Florian Wirtz have failed to live up to expectations and unless they can turn things around and start scoring some goals, their hopes for silverware could be tarnished.

Liverpool's lack of form is likely one of the main reasons why several players have been linked with an Anfield switch and although Antoine Semenyo has chosen to join Manchester City, there are still some options on the table for the Reds to explore.

Liverpool are vying for the transfer of AZ Alkmaar's Kees Smit

The name Kees Smit isn't likely to be one that many Liverpool fans will have heard of.

The 19-year-old currently plays for AZ Alkmaar as a midfielder with Maarten Martens relying on the youngster to keep his midfield together.

Smit has previously been linked with an Anfield switch but, unfortunately, nothing ever came to fruition.

And now, as per a fresh update from TEAMtalk, it seems like the Reds are once again going to go toe-to-toe with Real Madrid for his signature.

The report starts out by saying that Liverpool, Real Madrid, Manchester United, Tottenham and Newcastle are all 'monitoring' the midfielder.

TEAMtalk also add that AZ are likely to 'demand more' than £52 million to allow him to exit.

Liverpool signing Kees Smit would make plenty of sense

One of the key areas that Liverpool have struggled with this season is their midfield.

Although Wirtz was brought in to try and become the Reds' creative spark, it feels like a lot more should have come from the German.

Others such as Ryan Gravenberch and Dominik Szoboszlai have carried Arne Slot's midfield and without them, the Reds would be much worse off than they currently find themselves.

Indeed, now that they're fourth in the Premier League table and are 14 points adrift of first-placed Arsenal, the top flight title seems out of reach.

However, since they're still in the FA Cup and the Champions League, an extra set of legs in midfield would likely go a long way towards winning one of those competitions.

And, since Smit is only 19 years old, he has plenty of room to grow, which, judging off the Reds' recent recruitment, is exactly what Slot and Richard Hughes are looking for.
