Liverpool to open contract talks for 'sensational' star

Liverpool made a lot of big decisions over their players last season.

Even though many of them failed to meet expectations, some such as Ryan Gravenberch were still given bumper new deals.

Of those who were offered new terms, Dominik Szoboszlai and Alisson were definitely the most deserving with the Anfield outfit often performing much worse without them among their ranks.

However, the 2026-27 season is a new campaign under a new manager so things could obviously end up turning around and could end up getting back to how they used to be.

And, since Andoni Iraola's brand of football is heavy metal much like Jurgen Klopp's was, it certainly feels like things are heading that way.

Changes are still expected to occur at Anfield and now, a fresh update about one of their players has just emerged.

Liverpool want to offer Alexis Mac Allister a new contract this season

Before the 2026 World Cup took place, Liverpool's fanbase wanted their club to get rid of Alexis Mac Allister.

Throughout most of the season, it felt like the Argentinian forgot how to run and, even when he did get on the ball, it felt like he had no idea what to do with it.

However, when playing for Argentina in the World Cup, it felt like he'd ran it back a few years and it felt like he was back to his best.

At the time, most people thought this would be good for Liverpool as it would mean that teams such as Real Madrid would want to pay more for him.

But now, according to Caught Offside, Liverpool have a completely different idea about what they want to do with their "sensational" midfielder.

"Liverpool are taking a firm stance on Alexis Mac Allister during the summer transfer window," they wrote.

"The club intends to secure the Argentine midfielder’s future at Anfield by opening talks later this year over a new contract.

"With two years remaining on his current deal, Liverpool want to underline his importance to the squad and keep him as a central figure in their long-term project, sources have informed CaughtOffside.

"Tottenham Hotspur and Real Madrid expressed interest earlier in the summer, while Chelsea and Manchester City also made contact in recent weeks.

"However, Mac Allister’s representatives and Liverpool rejected these approaches. His father, who also acts as his agent, confirmed that leaving the club was never considered and that the player will remain at Liverpool.

"This effectively closed the door on any transfer this summer.

"Mac Allister is eager to work under new head coach Andoni Iraola and sees himself playing a leading role in Liverpool’s project."

As mentioned, Liverpool's midfield was rather lethargic last season.

Admittedly, Szoboszlai had the best campaign of his career but aside from the Hungarian, not many of the Reds' midfielders did all that well.

And, to make things worse, Curtis Jones now looks likely to exit Liverpool with Inter Milan now willing to up their offer to €40 million for the Englishman.

So, the fact that Liverpool are now looking to offer Mac Allister a new contract is clearly a big deal.

Iraola and other members of their management have clearly seen something in the Argentinian that they believe could help get them back to the top.

But, if no new players are going to be brought in, the Anfield outfit really need Mac Allister to deliver otherwise they're going to be in a whole world of trouble.
