Liverpool to bid for £75m Richard Hughes favourite

Liverpool needing more players after spending £450m in the summer is quite a difficult notion to get your head around, even though there are still clear areas of improvement that we can recruit in.

Prior to Giovanni Leoni's ACL injury, the Reds were looking to bring in another centre-back, with 25-year-old Marc Guehi at Crystal Palace approached towards the end of the summer for a £35m move.

Furthermore, the lack of a traditional defensive midfielder has been a concern for a long-time and now that Ryan Gravenberch is looking to drift ever-so-slightly further up the pitch, we're defensively open more often. Profiles like Adam Wharton and Angelo Stiller were considered during the summer.

And then you can look to the lack of a replacement for Luis Diaz, after the Colombian moved to Germany in the summer to play for Bayern Munich, there's a left-wing spot open to compete with Cody Gakpo, while Mohamed Salah on the right is nearing the end of his career at 33 years old.

One player who could solve the latter of the three issues is currently being assessed, per reports.

Bid to be submitted for Semenyo

According to Indykaila on X, the Reds are expected to submit a bid for Antoine Semenyo in either the January or Summer transfer window, a move that has the potential to be revolutionary for the team.

The Ghanaian is flying in the Premier League for Bournemouth right now, with six goals and three assists in his last 10 appearances, backing up the 13 goals and six assists he made last season in 42 games. It appears as though the 25-year-old is only going from strength to strength.

Naturally, he's acquired quite a lot of attention, and Liverpool will have their work cut out if they're to secure the player in the next 12 months, and he won't come cheap either - £75m is the rumoured fee.

But the Reds' sporting director Richard Hughes is a big fan, having brought him to the South coast a few years ago when he was an executive at Bournemouth. A secret release clause was embedded in Semenyo's contract, which is for an undisclosed amount, but Liverpool might have the advantage.

Even though the Ghanian is known as a left-winger, he is comfortable playing in both the wide forward positions and that's exactly why Liverpool might choose to go all-in on signing him.

As mentioned earlier, Gakpo is in need of a back-up. It's clear that as talented as Rio Ngumoha is, Slot isn't willing to risk his development by over-playing him, and so we're left in a situation where only one left-sided forward remains a regular feature in the squad. That's a high-risk move.

Furthermore, we've seen Salah's performance levels drop this year, which shouldn't necessarily be surprising because of his age, but there is no guarantee that he'll return to form, so it might now be time to start future-planning, bolstering the squad and alleviating the pressure on him.

Semenyo could facilitate both of those things if the Reds bring him in. As such, the money would be well-spent and regardless of how Liverpool's spending might be perceived, it would be a wise move.
