Liverpool to agree to first-team deadline day departure
Liverpool are not afraid to do business on deadline day, there have been a few high-profile comings and goings late in previous windows.
Things began to heat up for the Reds in the transfer market on Sunday morning, when news broke that Richard Hughes was working on a deal to bring Lutsharel Geertruida to Anfield.
The Dutchman is currently on loan at Sunderland, but his parent club RB Leipzig are reportedly open to dealing with the Premier League champions.
Although he can play as a central defender, it feels like Geertruida will come in as added cover at the right-back spot, where Calvin Ramsay is currently Arne Slot’s only natural option.
What does Geertruida move mean for Ramsay?
Conor Bradley is expected to miss the remainder of the season through injury, and Jeremie Frimpong is also sidelined with no exact date available for his return.
This has led to both Wataru Endo and Dominik Szoboszlai doing shifts at right-back in the last week, with Ramsay not apparently trusted to start for the Reds.
Geertruida’s signing will move Ramsay even further down the pecking order, and now it has emerged that the Scot could even leave the club on deadline day.
According to James Pearce on X, Ramsay could still leave the club on loan this winter and several Championship clubs have shown interest in the 22-year-old.
The fullback has previously spent time on loan with Preston, Bolton and Wigan, and will no doubt be excited by the prospect of once again playing regular first-team football.
Slot has made it clear where Ramsay sits in his plans this season, opting to play three different midfielders out of position over giving the Scottish international a chance.
Any loan move that is sanctioned on deadline day could include a clause to make the deal permanent, with it looking unlikely Ramsay will make it at Liverpool whilst Slot is still in charge.
Ramsay’s exit will likely only be authorised if Geertruida does arrive at Anfield, but that is looking more and more likely.
