ACL fears as Liverpool star set to miss rest of season
Some of Liverpool’s loan players have been experiencing indifferent seasons.
Senior players like Kostas Tsimikas and Harvey Elliott have endured tough spells away from Anfield - at Roma and Aston Villa respectively.
And more junior options have been recalled by their parent club amid a spate of injuries and selection issues.
Lewis Koumas has been redeployed at Hull City following a frustrating stint at Birmingham. Others - such as James Balagizi, Owen Beck and James McConnell - have also had their loan spells curtailed owing to injury.
There are however promising signs for the second half of the season for the likes of Luke Chambers and Calum Scanlon - and others who have bucked the trend include Luca Stephenson and Vitezslav Jaros.
Jaros loan cut short
But Jaros too has now seen his season end due to injury - with the on-loan Ajax goalkeeper requiring surgery on a knee problem.
Jaros had established himself in the Ajax goal following an initially difficult time settling in Amsterdam. But last week he suffered a devastating blow in training - with reports suggesting that the Czech shot-stopper may have damaged an ACL.
"He was in a lot of pain. You still hope it's not too bad, but it didn't look good,” Ajax stand-in manager Fred Grim told ESPN.
Jaros, 24, moved to the Eredivisie side on loan last summer alongside McConnell to work under former Liverpool assistant coach John Heitinga.
Jaros future now up in the air
He grew into the role after a difficult bedding-in period - embarking on a long, unbeaten run in the Dutch top flight before injury struck.
Liverpool will soon have to make their minds up over Jaros - with their goalkeeping department now heavily stacked.
He is unlikely to make the breakthrough ahead of Alisson Becker, Giorgi Mamardashvili and others - and Richard Hughes could have looked at next summer as a time to cash in.
But this latest injury could not only cost Jaros vital first-team experience - he might not recover in time in order to be fixed up with a new club.
