Liverpool star set to accept brand new contract offer
Richard Hughes inherited a difficult contract situation during his first year at Liverpool.
It's better if we don't bring up just how frustrating last season was with all the talk of Mo Salah, Virgil van Dijk and Trent Alexander-Arnold's expiring deals.
In the end, Hughes did what he could have done. He made all three of them brilliant offers. Two of them decided to take it, and one has moved on elsewhere.
After that experience, it's fair to say Hughes never wants to be embroiled in anything similar and neither do we as Liverpool fans.
It was exhausting and mentally draining and it tainted some of the brilliant football that we were playing on the pitch.
Now it feels like things are moving in the right direction. Hughes is working proactively to secure future deals for the players who deserve it.
The only slight concern is that of Ibrahima Konate's situation. He's entered the final year of his contract and there has been constant dilly-dallying over whether he's going to extend.
At times it has felt like a bit of a déjà vu situation to the Alexander-Arnold talks. Real Madrid are lurking in the shadows again and Xabi Alonso's side do want to bring in another centre-back.
Real Madrid also love a free transfer so Konate feels like the perfect option for them. Just like Alexander-Arnold was this summer.
However, the tide might just be turning and it feels like Konate could actually agree a contract extension.
According to L'Equipe Liverpool have made another contract offer to the Frenchman two weeks ago and they are now increasingly confident that Konate's camp are going to come to an agreement.
This is brilliant news and a stark contrast to what happened with Alexander-Arnold. Liverpool were never confident that he would extend, they merely hoped that he might.
The fact that the Reds are confident this time around is a very positive sign.
Konate is one of the best centre-backs in world football, so having him around for longer is going to be a huge boost for Liverpool.
He's still in the prime of his career at 26-years-old and he could be a massive figure in the club's plans to ultimately replace Van Dijk in the coming years.
