Speed is something Arne Slot wanted to add to his Liverpool team this summer.

It's an area where Liverpool definitely fell short last season. Which is strange to say because they were the Premier League champions.

But ultimately in the Champions League, in the clash against Paris Saint Germain, it was the speed of the French side's attack with Ousmane Dembele, Nuno Mendes and Achraf Hakimi that caught Liverpool out.

Looking around the top European sides, speed is becoming an increasingly important factor. The team that dominated Europe under Jurgen Klopp had Sadio Mane and a much faster Mo Salah bombing down the wings.

Robertson was also at the peak of his powers.

Salah has made up for his loss of speed with more technical quality. He's turned from a pure goal-scorer into a creator.

But ultimately, Liverpool have needed to add speed around him this summer and that's exactly what Richard Hughes has done.

In fact, in Jeremie Frimpong, Hughes has signed the fastest player not only in the Premier League for top-speed recorded so far but also in Europe for the most high accelerations per 90 minutes.

This is according to data from CIES and Skills Corner who have analysed the players who average the highest accelerations (>3m/s for >0.7") in Europe's top eight leagues last season.

And the result was that Frimpong leads the continent in high accelerations per 90 minutes, clocking an average of 15.68 per 90 minutes in domestic league matches across Europe’s top eight competitions. That places him marginally ahead of Newcastle’s Anthony Gordon (15.60) and Denmark’s Zian Flemming (14.54) - a staggering figure that highlights Frimpong’s elite speed on the right flank.

This is an important metric. The fastest players on the pitch are not only those who can record the highest top-speeds but the players who can consistently hit high speeds over and over again.

It's telling that the list includes Anthony Gordon, who is recognised as one of the fastest and most intense player in the Premier League.

Nicolas Jackson and Dan James are also include on the list.

So, Frimpong is not just quick in long stretches - though his top‑speed is impressive too - but he shatters the first-second barrier more often than almost anyone. He accelerates past most of his opponents, whether it's going forward or defending, closing gaps, bursting past markers and making recovery runs.

Slot’s football thrives on rapid transitions, sudden surges, and the terror of the unexpected. Frimpong offers that direct speed and unpredictability he lacked.

Bringing in the fastest player in Europe capable of maintaining his top-speed and sprints with the most frequency in matches is going to a huge weapon.

The kind of weapon Slot needed in his team.

Frimpong has shown that threat in the glimpses we have seen of him so far. Once he recovers from his hamstring injury, he'll show it again.
