Liverpool risk repeating expensive mistake that haunts their past

Richard Hughes may have got Liverpool's first transfer over the line with Victor Munoz but, there's still so much more work that they need to do.

One of their main problems going into the 2026-27 season was the lack of attacking options that they had at their disposal.

Even before Mohamed Salah confirmed that he was exiting, due to Hugo Ekitike's long-term injury and Alexander Isak's lack of reliability, a couple of new attacking additions were definitely needed.

However, the Reds' attacking line is not the only area that they needed a few more players added to, especially with how long and gruelling seasons are these days.

So, since Liverpool have only signed one player so far, it feels like they could be selling themselves short ahead of their next Premier League title charge.

Liverpool need to continue adding new players to their ranks before it's too late

Liverpool's lack of depth was their main problem last term.

Although Arne Slot and Hughes may have thought that they had enough options at their disposal, after the sheer number of injuries they suffered, they clearly didn't.

The life of a Premier League team in Europe these days is awful as, every three or four days they seem to be playing against top-class opponents which means every single player has to be on top form.

But, when injuries are forcing the club to use Dominik Szoboszlai and Curtis Jones at right-back, it's clear that their season wasn't planned for correctly.

This is why, even when the Anfield outfit feel like they have enough players to choose from, they need to continue scouring the market for players who can bring something new to the team.

For example, Munoz, who is going to be Liverpool's first signing of the summer, led Osasuna for take-ons of opponents and took the vast majority of their shots last season.

Sure, his end product is a tad raw at the moment but, since he's been called up to Spain's national team and isn't even 23 years old yet, there's plenty of time for him to develop into the next best thing at Liverpool.

And, since he only cost the club around £35 million, there isn't a massive price tag on his head that he needs to live up to which could do wonders for his confidence.

Liverpool can't let history repeat itself

Now that Iraola is in charge, fans are expecting the Spaniard to deliver a much better performance than his predecessor did.

Slot's first season as Liverpool boss may have brought the Premier League title back to Anfield but, since his second season was his own team rather than Klopp's, things didn't work out quite the same.

His tactical choices also baffled fans with many questioning whether he'd lost the plot.

However, as mentioned, the Reds' lack of depth is what really haunted them as, with the number of injuries they suffered, there was no way that they'd have been able to deliver a similar performance to the season prior.

And, even in the positions where they did have back-up options, they were never as good as their starting XI players which, for a team of Liverpool's calibre, is rather shocking.

Having a lack of depth is certainly something that haunts Liverpool's past so, that's exactly why the Reds need to make their moves as soon as possible.

Because, the sooner Iraola gets his squad together, the more likely they are to work with one another as, the 2026-27 campaign can't be another transitional season, no matter what.
