Final decision made: Liverpool have €80m deal to re-sign Jurgen Klopp favourite

Liverpool have turned down a chance to re-sign one of Jurgen Klopp's favourites.

Liverpool pushed through several surprising deals in 2025. Some of them, you've got to say, have come to look quite poor - especially those outgoing ones.

But there is one they can 'fix', if desired. Liverpool sold Jarell Quansah to Bayer Leverkusen for around €35m and the centre-back has since gone on to play very well in Germany.

So much so that he'll go to the World Cup with England. Quansah looks like an assured defender who can play at the highest level - and he also boasts that homegrown status.

Though, he'd also looked like that before Arne Slot took over. Jürgen Klopp was starting the youngster ahead of Ibrahima Konate towards the end of his reign in charge.

It's safe to say that Liverpool undervalued him with their sale but there is a clause in there to buy him back. Technically, two.

Bild reports that the Reds have rejected the chance to trigger the buyback clause this summer. It stood at €80m and would have immediately brought Quansah back to Anfield.

However, Liverpool have said no. Quansah is now set to remain with Leverkusen for the 2026/27 season and we imagine the Reds will have another look after that.

As things stand, though, there won't be any quick return for the defender.

Jarell Quansah: Situation Summary

Bayer Leverkusen Campaign and Stats

As of 27 May 2026, Jarell Quansah has successfully concluded a strong debut season in Germany. The 23-year-old centre-back joined Bayer Leverkusen from his boyhood club Liverpool last summer in a £35 million deal to secure regular game time. He made 28 Bundesliga appearances this season, logging 2,302 minutes and contributing a highly impressive four goals from central defence. He ended his domestic campaign on 16 May by scoring a 77th-minute equaliser in a 1–1 draw against Hamburger SV.

World Cup Selection

Quansah’s consistent form in the Bundesliga has earned him a place in Thomas Tuchel's final 26-man England squad for the upcoming 2026 World Cup in North America. After recovering from a thigh injury that forced him to withdraw from the March international camp, the defender is set to participate in his first major senior tournament.

Anfield Transfer Stance

Despite speculation, reports today confirm Liverpool have opted against activating their buyback clause to bring the defender back to Anfield this summer.
