Liverpool ponder big change as scouts watch £35m Jeremie Frimpong

Liverpool could be set to make a huge change in their team after watching Bayer Leverkusen's Jeremie Frimpong this week.

This comes from 90min. They report that Liverpool scouts were at Bayer Leverkusen's 1-1 draw against Borussia Dortmund at the weekend to watch Jeremie Frimpong.

The right-back - or right-wingback - has been in sensational form this season, drawing interest in a transfer. Arsenal were also at the game to watch him.

Frimpong, who typically plays on the right of a 3-5-2, already has five goals and five assists this season. The Dutchman is still only 22, too, making him a fantastic long-term prospect for clubs.

And then there's the kicker - a £35m release clause. That expires in the summer (Frimpong is contracted through 2028), meaning teams have a few more months to secure a bit of a bargain here.

Liverpool, in particular, will face a massive decision if they like what they saw at the weekend.

The big factor for the Reds is Trent Alexander-Arnold. They haven't needed to eye up elite right-backs over the last six years before Alexander-Arnold has been the short-term and long-term future there.

But things are changing. The Scouser is now playing a hybrid full-back/midfield role and it's one that's bringing the best out of him. On top of that, Jurgen Klopp is deploying Alexander-Arnold more and more as a proper midfielders - he featured there late-on against both LASK and Fulham.

Importantly, he thrived in both of those games. Alexander-Arnold picked up an assist after coming on against LASK and then scored the winner from his more advanced role at the weekend.

Liverpool do need a new midfielder, of course, but there's a feeling Alexander-Arnold could be that player. The Reds would need a replacement full-back, bringing Frimpong into the equation.

It's the only way a move for the Leverkusen star makes sense - but it's increasingly making a lot of it.
