Liverpool must step up chase for 'outstanding' ace as fresh transfer news emerges

Arne Slot's men have had a hard time of it this season.

They may be fourth in the Premier League but with the gap between themselves and first-placed Arsenal now at 14 points, a title charge feels like it's off the table.

For most teams in England's top-flight, fourth place would be a massive achievement.

However, after winning the Premier League last season and spending over £400 million on improving their first-team squad, most football fans thought that they'd run away with the title and perhaps even win the Champions League.

That's unfortunately been far from the case which is why several players have been linked with an Anfield switch already with the January transfer window a hot topic of conversation among fans.

But, for one of Liverpool's targets, a move will need to be made soon, especially after the recent transfer news that has emerged from L4.

Real Madrid are now entering the transfer race for Adam Wharton

Rumours of Adam Wharton's potential transfer from Crystal Palace to Liverpool have been around for some time now.

Talk of a move in the summer was rife but in the end, the Reds chose to upgrade their attack with Ryan Gravenberch expected to hold down the fort in the middle of the park.

And, while that's worked out most of the time, when the Dutchman is in need of a rest or just isn't at his best, it's clear that some, such as Wataru Endo, just aren't cut out to be Premier League players anymore.

This has then led to Liverpool's fans wanting to see some new midfielders added to their squad.

However, as per a fresh report from Spanish outlet AS, it seems like the Reds have plenty of competition on their hands for the transfer of the Englishman.

Interest in Wharton has always been heavy but, now that Real Madrid have entered the fold, Liverpool clearly need to make their move as soon as possible.

Los Blancos already have the likes of Eduardo Camavinga, Federico Valverde and Aurelien Tchouameni among their ranks but that seemingly hasn't stopped them from being offered a potential move for Wharton.

The former Blackburn Rovers ace was once dubbed 'outstanding' by Declan Rice after his impressive performances at Selhurst Park and it's clear why some of the biggest teams in the world are vying for his transfer.

AS report that clubs such as Manchester City, Arsenal and Chelsea are all interested in the Englishman but at the moment, it's Real who seem to be leading the way.

Liverpool must make their move for Adam Wharton as soon as possible

If Slot is serious about making Wharton a Liverpool player, he needs to do so as soon as possible.

Indeed, the fact that they spent over £450 million in the summer is one of the main things holding them back, but, if he's as good as they believe he is, he'd be worth every penny.

As mentioned, some of the biggest clubs in the world want to sign the midfielder and if he doesn't end up exiting Selhurst Park at some point soon, questions will need to be asked.

Indeed, other areas of the Reds' team such as their defence and attack may need improving before their midfield but, in reality, it'd be hard for Liverpool to turn down making a move for a player of his quality if he becomes available.

And, as proven by players such as Michael Owen and Trent Alexander-Arnold, when Real come knocking, it's a hard thing to turn down.
