Liverpool are just taking a little breather as they look to offload some of the club's current deadwood, and players who see their future away from Anfield.

Once that's done, the priority will shift on new arrivals again. But a new revelation could disrupt that plan because the Reds are now ever closer to securing a deal for one of their desired targets.

After signing Wirtz, Liverpool's objective has been to offload Federico Chiesa and Darwin Nunez. In their place, Liverpool plan to sign Alexander Isak and another versatile forward.

That versatile forward Anfield Watch understands is Malick Fofana.

The Lyon youngster is a special talent. Most notably because he can play on either wing and he's extremely versatile due to his ability to use both feet as equally comfortably.

Fofana's rapid speed and technical qualities make him a unique player. That's why according to Sasha Tavolieri writing for Sky Sports Liverpool have placed him at the top of their list when it comes to potential targets to replace Chiesa.

Of course, Liverpool are not the only club in the race for Fofana. It has been reported by L’Équipe that Chelsea are also interested in him and opened talks to sign him.

But the Blues have seemingly moved on. They are now closing in on signing a different young winger with Jamie Gittens close to completing a move as reported by Fabrizio Romano.

That paves the way for Liverpool to get Fofana and it's not the only encouraging news in the race for his signature that emerged on Tuesday.

Tuesday night it was confirmed that due to Lyon's debt they have been relegated to the second division of France. It is understood Lyon intend to appeal the decision but things do not look good for the team at the moment.

Even if the appeal is successful it's very clear that Lyon are in a difficult financial position and that only makes Liverpool move closer to completing what would be an opportunistic deal for Fofana.

And quite truly an incredible piece of business as well. Fofana is a special talent and the likelihood now is that the Reds will be able to secure him for a cut-price, and for a lot less than his actual value.

Opportunities like that very rarely present themselves, and Liverpool will likely take advantage.

Once again, Hughes has the chance to deliver a masterstroke. In Fofana, Liverpool could sign a player who will be tailor-made for Arne Slot's system and who could play for the Reds for the next decade to come.
