Liverpool’s season hasn’t gone to plan so far, but the January transfer window could be a chance to turn things around.

The Reds title defence has been a disaster, with Arne Slot’s side out of the running by mid-November, although there is still plenty to fight for this season.

It isn’t unusual to see January arrivals at Anfield and, owing to Liverpool’s struggles this campaign, many players are being linked with Merseyside moves.

Liverpool will be looking to repeat a successful January trick and turn their season around, and it could see an exciting new name added to Slot’s side.

Liverpool looking to better Manchester United in January market

Although Liverpool are no strangers to signing players in January, their winter business often seems to be spurred on when rival clubs take interest in their long-term targets.

Cody Gakpo and Luis Diaz both arrived at Anfield in January because Premier League rivals came in for them.

Both players were targets for the summer window, but Liverpool’s rivals taking action accelerated plans at Anfield.

The same could be about to happen again, and it looks like Manchester United could miss out once more like they did with Gakpo.

According to TEAMtalk, both Liverpool and United are keeping a close eye on Watford sensation Othmane Maamma, the Moroccan teenager who has become a key figure in Javi Gracia’s side.

Liverpool should follow Gakpo blueprint to sign Maamma

The report states that Watford would struggle to reject an offer that would see them bank a large profit on the roughly £1 million they paid Montpellier for Maamma in the summer.

The 20-year-old was the Golden Ball winner at the Under-20 World Cup earlier this season and has become a mainstay in Watford’s team since he returned from the tournament.

Maamma is valued at just €1.8 million by FootballTransfers, but it would probably take a significantly larger fee to secure his services in January.

It looks as though the Reds will miss out on Antoine Semenyo, so Maamma could be a perfect low price, high value alternate target.

Liverpool should look to recreate their push for Gakpo and strike quickly to sign Maamma, leaving Manchester United out in the cold once again.
