Liverpool lining up incredible midfielder to replace Alexis Mac Allister
Richard Hughes may be lining up a move to replace Alexis Mac Allister with a special midfielder.
Liverpool could face a difficult decision regarding their Argentine World Cup winner this summer.
If Mac Allister's recent dip in form continues, with reported interest from Real Madrid, selling him could become an enticing prospect for Hughes.
Mac Allister was a shrewd signing and pivotal last season for the Reds, but this season he has been a shadow of himself.
At times he has looked short of sharpness, lacking the energy and dynamism required to dominate midfield battles in the Premier League.
There are moments where he appears out of depth against high-intensity opponents, struggling to impose himself or keep pace with transitional phases. Whether this is fatigue, tactical mismatch, or a temporary loss of confidence, the visual drop in physical presence has been noticeable.
In a system that demands constant pressing and quick recovery runs, even small declines can have a significant impact.
With a strong offer from Spain, Hughes might just be tempted to make a profit on Mac Allister and move in a different direction.
Especially, because it seems like Hughes already has a replacement in mind for Mac Allister.
There's a report that Liverpool are exploring a summer move for Khephren Thuram from Juventus. He's been on the club's radar for a long time, since 2023 and he makes a lot of sense for the Reds.
As opposed to Mac Allister's more measured and laborious style, Thuram would bring power, drive and relentless intensity to give this Liverpool side a lot better of a tempo.
Thuram is a towering and commanding physical presence in midfield, capable of dominating duels, covering ground aggressively and disrupting opposition transitions.
He's comfortable on the left-side of midfield so he could easily slot in alongside Ryan Gravenberch and together they could form a formidable duo with Florian Wirtz playing ahead of them in the no.10 role.
Unfortunately for Mac Allister, Liverpool’s system demands midfielders who can press with force, recover quickly, and carry the ball through contact.
He doesn't seem to be that player but Thuram excels in those areas. His long strides allow him to surge past opponents and he's hard to beat in one vs one situations offensively and defensively.
Unlike Mac Allister he is a great ball carrier, capable of bring in the ball forward into dangerous areas. That verticality would add thrust to Liverpool’s midfield, particularly in games where energy and athleticism are decisive.
Defensively, he provides greater security. Thuram is comfortable engaging in shoulder-to-shoulder battles and shielding the back line, which will ease pressure on the defence.
Ultimately, in Liverpool's current state, Thuram makes a lot more sense than Mac Allister right now.
And with Hughes exploring a move for the Frenchman, while also stalling in contract negotiations with the Argentine, it feels like the Reds are already lining up a move to replace their current no.10.
