Liverpool are working on an incredible move to replace Alexis Mac Allister.

The Argentine was a fan favourite last season. However, his stock has fallen at Anfield over the course of the last few months.

Now as Liverpool are in talks with both Dominik Szoboszlai and Ryan Gravenberch to extend their contracts, Mac Allister has become the outsider.

Even though he's on the same length of contract as the aforementioned duo, talk of his extension do not appear to be as big of a priority for Liverpool.

That could be a huge hint of where Liverpool stand. Especially with Real Madrid also being very keen on signing the Argentine.

Given the direction Liverpool seem to be heading towards, a player like Mac Allister, who isn't the quickest and who isn't necessarily the most progressive midfielder, is a luxury problem. For whom the club cannot afford to turn down a big offer.

But if Mac Allister leaves, who could replace him? Is there even anyone good enough to come into Liverpool’s midfield right now?

The answer is, yes. There’s someone Liverpool are already lining up to sign who could be an incredible replacement and an incredible deal for the club.

There was a report about the Reds making a move for Kees Smit. He’s been catching the eye at AZ Alkmaar and Arne Slot seems to be a big fan of him.

The club’s recruitment team should be pretty impressed with him, too. He’s very much a typical modern day midfielder. Right now he's probably one of the best young midfielders in European football.

At just barely 17 years old, he led AZ Alkmaar to win the UEFA Youth League in 2023. Now 19-years-old, he's a regular starter for the club's senior team and has already made over 50 appearances for the side.

Smit is full of energy and very dynamic. He covers a lot of ground and he’s very effective at pressing his opponents.

He makes 3.5 recoveries in the opposition’s final third per 90 minutes, which is a very impressive return and it’s tailor-made for a side like Liverpool who want to be more effective in their press.

Smit’s technical qualities are also excellent. He reads the game well. He’s able to make great forward runs and he’s got an excellent shooting technique and ability to get into the box from midfield.

On paper he's much more progressive than Mac Allister, which makes him an ideal replacement.

Given the fact that Dutch sides don't necessarily command massive transfer fees, he could be an incredible deal in terms of value for money.

The prospect of him linking up with the likes of Florian Wirtz and Dominik Szoboszlai would be mouthwatering.
